View Full Version : Can new TiVo finish out existing prepaid contract?

I have a S2DT running on a 3-year prepaid plan that has about 17 months remaining. It is near definite that I will be buying a TiVoHD very soon (see my other recent thread).

Assuming I buy the TiVoHD from a retailer (i.e. not directly from TiVo), do I have to activate it on a new plan, or can I activate it on the remainder of the existing prepaid plan (which will obviously deactivate the S2DT?) without a penalty? I've always thought you could do that, but when I click on the "Change TiVo Service Number" link in Manage My Account, the text reads:
You can change your TiVo Service Number online if either of these situations apply:

* You activated your DVR and then exchanged it through your retailer or through the manufacturer and now need to update the TiVo Service Number on your account
* You need to correct the TiVo Service Number that you initially activated

Doesn't say anything switching which TiVo is using an existing plan.

You can do that by calling. I did the exact same thing not that long ago. I bought mine from Amazon.

I am not sure if there are any rebates on the TiVoHD at the moment, but the thing to remember is if you switch the contract onto the new box instead of getting new service you can not get any rebates.

Also you can transfer your service as long as it is monthly or anual.
Product lifetime service is the only on not transferable box to box.

You can transfer service by either calling, or I believe it is possible to transfer service online at Tivo.com under manage my account.

You can't buy from Tivo.com. Those deals require you to sign up for new service. You can buy from another retailer and transfer your service online. All you do is login to tivo.com and change your TSN. This will keep your existing contract and switch service to the new box.

Manage my account is the way to go. First make sure you have your account set-up. Then it is only a matter of logging in, specifying the new TSN and then voila.

I did that with my TiVoHD which took over for my monthly S2DT. A snap.
