I currently am in Canada, and own a HD PVR from my cable company. I am considering the purchase of a TIVO as my current box has no hard drive expansion capabilities. My question is on season passes.

Is a season pass based on a show only on a specific channel? can I say to my Tivo Record 24 on Fox, and if I have 2 fox networks on my lineup, will it record off of both? I have 2 timeshift from the east coast, so I get 2 of each of both eh american and canadian networks so 2 fox, 2 nbc, 2 cbs... as well as the canadian networks also carry alot of the shows off those networks.

Using my example, if I say record 24 off of channel 22 (fox affilate west) but there is a 2 others shows on 2 other networks both recording, will tivo look and find the other fox affiliate automatically? I am not sure if this question makes sense?

On my current PVR (cable box).. I can tell it to record 24 but it ties the show, and the channel together so will only record off of 1 channel. I can give it a optino to select multi channels, but it does not base it on the netowrk. so if I say only record 24 but on any channel, it will record off of any network, canda or us.. if I say only new episodes, (bad guide data), it will also record only the new episodes and will record all of them or up to 7..

Please clarify

TiVo's season passes are channel specific. However, TiVo also has Wishlists. If you set up a Wishlist for 24 it will record on any channel.

You can also set up multiple season passes for the same show on different channels, and it will go by the priority ordering in the SP manager. That is sometimes useful.. but so are wishlists.

Is there any way to get some kind for conflict warning? I know it don’t happen that often but I’ve have five TiVo’s now starting from some time in 2000 to today with my two TiVo HDs and I’ve never understood why it can’t pop up a message when two shows that are in your season pass list are going to be on at the same time within the next few days. Did I miss something or is there a way to add this?

Go to the ToDo list. The top entry is "Recording History". Go into that and scroll through all the "Will Not Be Recorded" entries to find out why. If it's because of a season pass conflict, it will tell you. Unfortunately you have to go through each entry seperately which can be rather time consuming.

It would be insane to have a warning for every single one.. I have many tens if not hundreds of 'will not record' things in the To do list at any time.

I could not disagree more. I’d want to know. It could be a setting that is on or off.

But again, a warning DOES NOT MAKE SENSE.

You have the Season Pass Manager to order what takes priority.

How/when/where exactly would you propose this warning to come up? In a nice UI that Joe Schmoe can understand?

I agree, a pop-up warning makes no sense, and neither does a message in the message box. TiVo could, however, mark the shows in the To Do list which will not be recorded because of a conflict with a little icon, bolding, or coloring which lets the user know which ones are not going to be recorded because of a conflict without having to actually drill into each and every one to find out it isn't a conflict. It would also be nice to be able to sort the recording history by the reason for not recording, so all the conflicts are in one place.

To each his own but it does make sense to me. You don’t have to shout. :)
Why would I want to spend a bunch of time I don’t have checking and rechecking Season Pass Manager (every day?) just in case some scenario I’ve not thought of comes to be and a show I’m actively fallowing is going to get bumped because it or some other show changes its time or day or length or the guide data is incorrect or whatever. Every time I go to check it, it’s because a new run show that I want to see is not recorded or stops being recorded all together. Like hey, how come I’ve not seen that show in awhile. I don’t mind if did not record because it’s already been recorded or it’s a rerun. I wait and wait for the screen that tells me there are no conflicts at the time a make the season pass. Seems fair that I would want to know that it’s no longer the case. I want show 8 and 9 on my list and if that changes I want to know. I guess if Joe Schmoe just has one TiVo with only one tuner and likes to add lots of season passes he may or may not get and likes to never know if he’ll get to watch next week’s episode next week or in three months, that’s great for Joe.

If poor old Joe can makes sense of the To Do List I’ve got a fiver that says he can handle a note on the screen telling him that X number of first run shows or X number of shows will not record tomorrow or in the next few days: “With current guide data 3 show(s) will not be recorded. Select here to jump to the To Do List.” Hey, on Tuesdays I normally only have 1 show. I think I will take a look at the To Do List. That a boy Joe, that a boy.

Irhorer - Yes or that or something or anything. One minute ahead, whatever. :)
