Will I still be able to watch HD channels in HD with a series 2 DVR? Or will the 30 minutes of automatic recording downgrade the picture?
Thanks.

The series 2 TiVo does not handle HD. Period. Look into a Series 3 or TiVo HD if you're interested in HD programming and a TiVo.

*need* to upgrade? no, but you certainly will *want* to
but the S2 does not do HD, it does standard def, and your shiny new HDTV can certainly accept a standard def signal, but it's not pretty.

With an HDTV you will want to have a S3/HD Tivo. But you actually could use a S2 with a converter box (if using OTA). However, if you're using satellite then the S3/Tivo HD does not work with that.

You can use a Series 2 to record/buffer in SD, but watch HD direct, without TiVo functionality.
If you want full TiVo functionality in HD, for OTA or cable, you need one of the HD models.
