Hello,

OK, here's my dilemma. I had to get my old Series 1 Tivo unit replaced and they sent me a new Series 2 unit. I know I can do a video out to vhs from the Series 1 but not a practical solution for me at all. So, is it possible to do a direct transfer from the Series 1 Hard Drive (via USB converter cable) to my Series 2 unit? Or, is it possible to write the shows (in this way) to a writable DVD? Or is there a service that I can pay to do this? OR AM I SOL!!?

Thanks in advance,
Buster

You need to play the video from the Series 1 A/V out into something, be it the Series 2, a capture device on the PC, or a DVD recorder.

OK, so is there a conversion cable that would go from the video out on the back of my Series 1 to the USB port of the Series 2 or a writable DVD player? Not sure how I would do the "video out" to one of these.
Thanks,
Buster

Either of those (Series 2 or dvd recorder) have A/V input. Simply connect the Series 1 output to the input to the other, and record.

For your PC, you would likely need a PCI card or USB video capture device.

Hello,

I was looking for the AV imput as you suggested when I realized that my unit is NOT a pure standalone Tivo unit, but a DirectTVPlus receiver, as is my old one. So, this explains why I can't see an AV input. The only input/outputs I have are:

COAX:
Off-Air in
Out to TV
Satellite in
rf remote antenna

OTHER:
Digital Audio (optical)
USB ports (one in front one in back)
Video Out (5-pin circular, like an S-Video recepticle)
Audio Out (4 stereo jacks, white/red)
Video Out (2 yellow jacks)

The old one is pretty much the same, except NO USB ports and it also has:
Ctrl Out:
Serial
IR

So, can I assume that I won't be able to go from unit to unit? I don't want to have to open my PC and I don't have a DVR recorder. Is there a service where I can send in my unit and they can extract to a DVD for me?

Thanks,
Buster

Not 100% sure, but I don't think any boxes labelled DirecTV Plus are tivos, in which case, you're in the wrong place.

If the new box is not a tivo, you can pretty safely assume there's no way to xfer content directly from your old S1.

Yes, you definitely do not have a TiVo at all. You should ask DirecTV how to record analog video onto their DVR.

Otherwise you can keep your Series 1 around and just view the recordings from it, or get a DVD recorder or PC capture device and record to either.
