So did anyone else watch this tonight? I just finished watching my recording. It was okay. I'm a big MXC fan and I was hoping it would be as fun as that. You can tell everything so Americanized. They have to wear life vests! I'm not particularly fond of the hosts. And while it was funny to see some of the wipeouts, can we not have obstacles that are at least possible for the contestents to get through?

Didn't like it as much as I was hoping. Way to much editing for time. They should start with like 12 people and work from there, or eliminate the first 12 a lot quicker.
Liked the other game show that followed it more. ( I survived a Japanese Game Show)

That's good to know. There was a conflict so that one didn't record, but maybe I can watch it online. Japanese game shows are a lot funner IMO anyway. This show just seemed like they were trying to hard to be LIKE a Japanese gameshow but had to follow silly american safety rules.

Wipeout was okay... John Henson (one of the hosts) used to host 'The Soup' or 'Talk Soup' on E! and is a pretty funny guy.
Liked the second show better... looking forward to that thread. :-) Hopefully will get some more insight and translation from the Maji-Deh segments.

Love MXC. Thought this was awful. Hosts were boring and not very funny which was surprising because I liked skunk boy when he was on Talk Soup. Did enjoy the Japanese show after.

Ninja Warrior on G4 seems to be the inspiration for this show.
It starts off with 100 contestants and they proceed through four stages of competition. It usually spans multiple episodes, so it's perfect for TiVo owners.
At any rate, it is much better than Wipeout. They don't pull any punches either; if your touch the water at all, your out & when people fall they usually eat it hard.

Not as funny as MXC but I still enjoyed it. I could watch people getting bleeped up on the Big Balls all day. They need a funnier funny guy announcer. I was hopinig the stripper would win.
I don't like reality shows but the Japanese show that followed was pretty entertaining.

I too could watch them bouncing off the Big Balls for an extended time. Some of the players were so out of shape I though they were going to keel over. The woman who slid down the ramp holding the rope and straight into the water - :D

Loved how the stripper chick was talking smack to the black guy when he got knocked off the knock-off wheel and the she forgot to jump and got drilled and carried over 3 platforms. It looked like mouth of the south had problems swimming back to the start after he fell on the trampoline section. He should have jumped down to the lower tramp and bounced up to the upper one in one motion like the first guy. The winner made the same mistake.

I LOVE Ninja Warrior, but I don't think it was the inspiration for this show. I think its more inspired from MXC...and I know MXC is the Amercanized voiceover for the actual name of that gameshow, but I can't think of what its actually called right now. For those that like Wipeout or didn't like it because of the lame hosts or something, try MXC (http://www.spike.com/show/21908) over on SpikeTV. Kenny and Vic are MUCH funnier!
The only comparison I see to Ninja Warrior is the amount of contestants that start and the number of stages. Wipeout is all just a big joke, Ninja Warrior is taken VERY seriously by the majority of the contestants.

I read that this is because they have a more conservative society so shows like this are a real chance to escape reality and break out, they do it more for the fun while in the US it's about the money.

That's a good point. It kinda takes away some of the fun of the show because then it gets too serious...its about winning $50k. When its just something to do for fun then its just more entertaining.

I'm a big MXC fan and was really disappointed in Wipeout. Not funny and just a poor imitation of MXC. Though I do like seeing Jill Wagner without having to watch a Mercury commercial. I thought the 2nd show, ISAJGS, was better, though I could do without the big-brother reality show aspect of it.

The name of the show is Most Extreme Elimination Challenge, but it's abbreviated as MXC, and I believe that is the way it shows up in the listings. It was shown on Spike TV for a long time, and as far as I know, it still is.
Also, FYI, the first couple of seasons are available on DVD.

I found Wipeout to be virtually unwatchable. Terrible hosts, horrible game format (except for the Big Balls) and the competitor casting agent should be publicly stoned.

Yes. Our Tivo picks it up as MXC. It comes on Spike. Its usually on weekday mornings and a lot during the weekends. To give you a taste, you should also be able to search for MXC on youtube for a preview of what you'll be getting yourself into. I just remember laughing non-stop when I saw my first episode of MXC.
ETA: Here's a good youtube clip that gives you an idea of the format of MXC:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SdPWfFsrgf4&feature=related
They always make up "teams" and its always really wacky kind of groups pitted against each other.
I like how in the challenge with the spin wheel the big guy was trying not to get dizzy by swiveling his head to focus on one target thinking 'Oh yeah I got this' , but when the wheel stopped he still staggered around like a drunk.. funny stuff!

With Wipeout, I was hoping for something like Ninja Warrior, but got something completely different, but I still loved it.
I am a big fan of the Soup, and in a way it reminded me of that. On the Soup they basically make fun of everyone in Hollywood, which is funny, because they have it coming. On Wipeout, they would let the contestants talk trash about how great they were going to do, and when they wipeout, the commentators make fun of them. All 3 of the commentators were hilarious. I have not laughed as hard as I did last night in a long time.
Did not like I survived a Japenese Game show. It is basically just a reality show. While I like some reality shows, this did not do it for me.

I wasn't understanding that either. I couldn't understand why they got to keep going. Then I thought well surely they're penalizing them for not completing the obsitcal. Like add 20 seconds to their overall time or something. But I didn't see any punishment for not finishing a tasks, so why not just swim your way through it???

This is the greatest show ever.
We laughed our asses off. I had to turn on the ceiling fan because I was sweating from laughter. Not only is the action hysterical, but Jon Hensen is brilliant. I loved all his comments about the tall sherriff. 6'9", 12'3", 18'13", sasquatch.
A buddy popped over during the Japanese show and we watched Wipeout again for him and laughed just as hard. The first two women to try the swing were beyond funny!

WAY too much editing, like someone else said. Just show some people's "complete" runs. (In quotes because I realize you're not really going to show a whole 5 minute attempt.. but at least show one person at a time, except for *some* "funniest falls" or something I could accept.)
Yeah, most of the various obstacles seemed IMPOSSIBLE to get completely past. The balls by far the most. One or two people got to the third one.. Most people got to the first and bounced off the second (that was funny admittedly).
I don't quite get what happens in all cases when someone inevitably fails at a particular task. It SEEMED like with the 'rectangular cushion like things', they would try to go from one pile to another.. wherever they fell off, they'd then move the takeoff stand UP to the next one?
for other ones, it seemed like you could essentially just GO PAST IT.. so e.g. why not get punched into the water RIGHT AWAY if you then get to keep going?

I admit I haven't watched more than a few minutes of the show on Spike (at most)..
But from what I remember seeing, and the Wikipedia entry confirms, what we see in English is essentially a spoof, due to the voiceover.
Wipeout itself was at least a "real" game show.
From the bits I've seen of MXC, I wish there were accurately subtitled or dubbed uncut versions shown here.

I thought that Wipeout was really pretty funny.
Everybody loves an epic fail. :p
The second lady they showed...the big, black lady who had trouble keeping her pants on at the end, that was an epic fail. The laying down, final rope swing was great.
I dislike MXC. I think that the overdubs are stupid, and the announcers are too over the top.
I like Anderson and Henson's more reserved, sarcastic style.
Probably because that's a lot like my kind of humor. Except I don't have an audience. :p

No, there were two segments. Take off stand, three toppling towers, take off stand, three toppling towers. Therefore, they had to basically make two attempts at the towers, one from each take off stand.
I agree that if they were truly going for speed, you just make a halfhearted attempt at the obstacle and then just cruise past it.

Not that it really matters, but aside from when they get to the Big Balls, isn't most of that water (a) shallow enough to not be able to really swim through and (b) covering a mire of muck that is not a piece of cake to just walk through. Don't know if there are any rules about how much of an attempt must be made for an obstacle, but I don't think it's necessarily a given that attempting to circumvent it is any guaratnee of shaving off time.

Overall I enjoyed it. I definitely had some LOL moments. I'm pretty sure in the commercials you see someone cross the balls, unless I'm mistaken. I think most people tried to step on them and it seems you should try to bounce with both feet from each. Not saying it's easy. And that one would definitely be faster if you could actually make it across because there was a ladder at the end of it if you didn't. Plus it seems like most people were winded by then, so climbing up the ladder soaking wet isn't trivial. And in the beginning, with the blocks it was thick mud, so it definitely was faster to cross on top like the 1 or 2 people did. I mean did you see the guy that had to take his track pants off because they were covered in mud and slowing him down?
I couldn't find "MCX" in the directv online guide. It sounds like something I'd be interested in.

I had been wondering if it was even possible to do the Big Balls and I think that the only way to do them is to not try landing on your feet but jump spread eagled and essentially belly flop from ball to ball.
Watched Wipeout. I enjoyed it, but I would rather they played it stright as opposed to all the sophmoric humor attempts. But yes, I can watch the big balls all day long.
Here's my theory on how to get past the BBs......it seems you need to minimize any downward forces which would get bounch right out. At least for the platform to the first ball, I would think almost a dive where you try to be going as perpendicular to the ball as possible would minimize any outward pressure from the ball. But then the key is hoping you can generate enough friction between your body surfaces and the balls to stop your movement. I think it is doable in this fashion.
We did not remember to record ISAJGS. Will try that one next week.
[EDIT] Just watched a few clips of ISAJGS on ABC's site....I think I like that more. I hope they re-air it (I don't have any torrent client setup right now).

I thought most game shows give away more than $50,000. Although I suppose you have to get up many levels to get there, Who wants to be a Millionaire, 1 vs 100, Deal or No Deal.

Yeah, it was on the HD channel but it wasn't HD. I remember having to double check to make sure I was on the HD channel when it came on. I don't know why they wouldn't have it in HD.

Cost.
I'm pretty sure that this program is being made on the cheap.

Goes to show you don't have to spend millions to make a show that cracks up most of America.

I am SO glad you didn't say "... to make a good show".

My theory is to go at the first ball with a big bearhug type approach. Latch on to it. Then pull yourself up and make a lunge for the next one with the same approach. Rinse and repeat. Why waste the time? You don't "win" by getting to the other platform. Just jump in the water and start swimming.
I could summarize this show in three words: God Bless TiVo. If I had to watch the whole slow thing I would have gouged out my eyes. The final obstacle course was the only thing worth watching.

It's like a game show with Max X narration!

Same with us.
Freakin' hilarious. We were rolling.
We missed it (Drew forgot to set it on the TiVo) but luckily the pilot was re-aired a few days ago.
