As a long time Inspector Morse viewer, I was pleasantly surprised by the new (now) Inspector Lewis series on Masterpiece Mystery. I thought the episode did a good job of spanning the change from Morse to Lewis. ;)

Is it a series, I thought it was merely a single episode. If it is indeed a series, I will be happy about it.

Glancing at the KCET (Southern California) schedule, it has four shows listed.

I liked the first one pretty well. I expect the others to be as good. Recommended.

The one episode I have seen did look like a pilot for a series and I was surprised that the obvious follow-on series was never shown. Well, I guess now is the time.

Higher math and crime. It sounds like Numb3rs. Maybe this is where they got the inspiration. Did the first episode of Lewis predate Numb3rs?

During Morse, Lewis frequently mentioned his wife. Did we ever see her?

I seem to recall that we saw Lewis's wife several times. Dunno why they felt they had to kill her off.

I like the series so far. It sort of has the same feel as the Morse ones.

I like the series so far. It sort of has the same feel as the Morse ones.According to IMDB, Maureen Bennett portrayed Val Lewis in four episodes from 1987 to 1991. The synopsis of the '91 episode doesn't mention Mrs. Lewis' death which it surely would if it happened.

I think they need Robbie to be more flexible with his time (as was Morse)
which is why her character had to be eliminated.

Did you notice that Lewis is falling into Morse's ways? Pint at lunch. As a Sergeant, he usually only had lemon squash. ;)

That's the logical answer, and likely reflects the thinking of the suits at the production company.

One the other hand, Midsomer Murders gets along just fine with Inspector Barnaby having a wife, and would be the poorer without her.

I don't believe there was a prequel to Midsomer Murders, so the construction of the Barnaby character (and family) could be completely flexible.

Lewis, OTOH, follows his old boss, Morse, and most might expect him to have many of the same characteristics.
