If I cancel my TiVo subscription will I still be able to download shows from Amazon unbox to the TiVo to watch on the TV?
Thanks,

No. Your box becomes a giant paperweight.

In a similar line of questions, this is my first time here. May I use a Tivo, simply as a DVR, without the damned TiVo subscription?
Thanks!

Unless it is a very old Series 1, then no. You will only be able to view recordings still on the hard drive, and use the live TV functions (30 minute buffer which you can use to pause or rewind), but that's it.

I also have a similar question. I realize that without service on my Series2, I won't be able to actually record programs to the box, but is the scenario below a workable solution for watching programs already recorded?
I currently have a Series2 with a subscription that is about to expire. I want to upgrade to an HD, in order to take advantage of the cable cards and ditch my Comcast converter box.
What I'd like to do is put the HD (with service) in my living room then let the service expire on my Series2 and put it in the bedroom. I am hoping that I can use the Series2 as a kind of storage unit. In other words, programming comes in through the HD with all the bells and whistles and when there's something I want to watch in the bedroom, I use my network to push programs to the Series2.
Is this feasible?
Thanks!!

MRV (Multi Room Viewing) and all of the other Home Media options like transferring to your PC require a subscription. Without a sub your S2 does indeed become a large paperweight or doorstop.

What about the ones that came with TiVo Basic? Wouldn't they just revert back to Basic (I'm guessing you may still lose HMO...

The show's already recorded can be watched but nothing new can be added or transfered and trying to watch live tv thru it is a pain in the *** since the banner will keep yelling no data.
(once forgot to update my CC info)
So i kinda learned the hard way.

With Tivo basic, you get about 4 days of guide data. None of the network transfer features, MRV, PC, etc work.

then let the service expire on my Series2
Subscriptions do NOT just expire. You have to actively cancel the subscription.

Or, if your cc info changes (new expiration date on a new card), and you don't update, then your account "goes away."
