Doing a hard drive upgrade for friend who owns a HDVR2. They have asked me to make sure the unit does not call in to Directv. Just confused about what I need to do. Is it just a matter of using PTVnet for Directivo from DVRupgrade? I do not have this unit myself so I will not be able to test it out. Can anyone point me in the right direction?
Also If I disable the call into Directv, will I be able to upgrade the software on my Tivo or do I need the phone line for this?

There's a hack called "fakecall" that will stop the call in to TiVo, more info on that in the Underground Forum, search for it.
As for the call to DirecTV, that's only for PPV reporting and locating the unit when a sports subscription is purchased. Only way to disable that is to unplug the DVR, but it may stop working suddenly if it decides it wants to call in for this reason.

so I have heard you get a Nag if your Tivo does not call in. Is this nag as a result of not calling in to Tivo or Directv?

The nag is because it cannot make the TiVo call. fakecall fixes the nag.

I did a clear and delete everything on a unit I sold on eBay. Now the guy I sold it to says he's being prompted to do the call during guided setup. The hacks are still in place and he wants them.
Can we make it skip this step somehow? Or make it think it got through etc. Can't remember what I did way back when..
Or do I need to have him let it do the call once by removing the fakecall and route add lines in the author file, then put them back afterwards?
