1. the TiVo needs to be a Series2 or later
2. it needs to be subscribed
3. download TiVo Desktop 2.6.1
The free version of TD allows transfer of plain MPEG-2 recording back to your TiVo. If you need to transfer other formats (like .avi) you'll need the $25 Plus upgrade, or a free alternative like pyTiVo.
Sounds like #2 is your first problem though, as it needs to be subbed for any of this to work.

Transferring content to/from the DVR over the network is one of the features that are enabled with a subscription, hence a subscription is required.

so you cant netword a tivo into your own home network without a subscrition? Couldnt it work just like another computer you have in your house a machine with a hard drive and modem? Cant you transfer files another way maybe connecting the laptop to the tivo machine?

Nope. Without a subscription the box is basically a boat anchor. It can pause/FF/RW Live TV within the 30 minute buffer but that's about it. The other features are all part of the subscription.

It could, but TiVo decided not to do it that way, as it makes more money to make as many features as possible part of the subscription service.
