We have Sony SVR 3000 and Comcast digital cable with a cable box.

Our Tivo only shows 98 channels?

Do we have to use the IR cable to be able to record channels above 98?

Does the cable box need to be on 24Hrs a day for Tivo to tell it to change channels thru the IR cable?

Thank you,.....marc

Your TiVo's tuner can't tune digital cable channels.

If the channels above 98 are digital, then naturally you can only get them thru your cable box.

You will have to feed the cable box's output into your TiVo.

You will have to put your TiVo thru Guided Setup all over again, and tell it you're using a cable box.

The IR cable is not involved in the recording. The IR cable is only for letting the TiVo control the channel changes on the cable box.

Once you have redone Guided Setup and told your TiVo it is now recording with a cable box, you'll need a way for the TiVo to control the cable box when it needs to change channels.

That's where the IR blaster comes in.

Yes, and sometimes that can cause problems. Some cable providers have their boxes set to turn off at set time, usually 1 or 2 in the morning, unless you press a button within a certain time.

The TiVo lacks the ability to do this, and also lacks the ability to turn a cable box on (at least via IR). It can only change channels.

That's interesting. Do you know why?

Probably to load guide data, because they haven't figured out how to do a trickle guide.
