I Tivoed American Idol tonight, and didn't add any padding in case it ran late.
When I got to the end, Ryan Seacrest said, "The winner of American Idol is...David...[Delete this recording?]". It couldn't have cut off at a worse time if they tried. It was a little frustrating, but pretty funny. I imagine there are others out there who didn't take it as well, though.

In Australia we cut off with just one more word...
Cook! Then the delete popped up!
We get it live here via Foxtel PayTV.

You'd think that Fox would know not to hold over American Idol two minutes and screw up everyone's recordings.

They didn't "hold over." It was live. It ran late.
You'd think Tivo owners would know to pad by now.

I got Cook.
But I didn't get to see any reactions... just his eyes getting wide. I don't think he thought he was going to win.

yeah mine got cut too,
If you still have the show, check out the F-bomb that went over the air when they came back from commercial before the Hero duet...
you can hear someone say "Where the f*ck is the music...jamn it in...get the band"
out of the right channel...
BTW, couldn't pad...Boston Legal and Law and order were on

Mine got to Cook, then cut off. There wouldn't have been any problems if they would have just not let Brooke White perform

Last year mine ended with Blake and Jordin about to find out who won. We had to go online to see who the winner was.
Since then, we added a 15 minute pad to AI. And it's paid off a few times this year, including today.

I padded with 10 minutes, so I was fine.
But it was funny, I watched the timing of the announcement of the winner and noticed that at the exact time he said "Cook", it changed from 1:59 to 2:00 on the indicator. I knew there would be a lot of annoyed TCF members. ;)
I can't help but think that this was intentional by Fox... the timing just seemed TOO good.

In Northern California/Bay Area, my S3 cut off right at David...
Luckily we taped the 10 o'clock news right after so we got "Cook".

Luckily, nothing else was recording, so we switched to the Fox channel and missed maybe 3 seconds.

lucked out in this one ... did a manual recording and the time increments are 5 minutes ... so I ended up with 2:05 ... and even with that, I lost a minute off the end.

Yeah, they were saying "Burn in Hell TCF"...... :D

I always add 15 minutes padding to the AI finale so I had no issues. I add 10 minutes to season pass since it always runs over some so it shouldn't be a shock that it ran over on the finale if you have been watching during the season.

They were talking about this today on the local Fox affiliate morning show, and the anchor said "you know, they do this just to mess with those who record the show" (I don't think she had any inside knowledge though :)). I thought it was interesting that she dared to say that on the same channel. :)

It's the opposite for me. As the years go on, I spend less time monitoring my TiVo's To Do list and thinking about what upcoming events and shows might be airing live. I'm just living my life. For a one-off recording, like the Oscars or the SuperBowl, sure, I'll pay closer attention. And with one-off recordings of live events, TiVo pops up a warning when you set up the recording. But my American Idol SP has remain unchanged and has been swimming along fine for years. TiVo's been good enough for so long, that I've grown complacent. It does seem a bit silly that 10 years later, we're still expected to go in there and pad "just in case." I understand the ideology behind the tech and who's really at fault, but TiVo could just as easily send a message to the boxes of subscribers with AI season passes, alerting them with a warning/suggestion to pad the live finale. Or do it for us automatically. Or "soft pad" all shows that it can. Or hell, get a live update over it's broadband connection.
I just didn't think about it.
And that's why mine got cut off exactly at the same time as the OP. I knew we were down to the wire, which added drama to the moment. But the precise millisecond it got cut off in... just makes this video so priceless:

Good think I was able to catch the rest in the live buffer. :D If I'd try to watch this later at night... it would have been even funnier.

I've watched every episode this season, and I can recall just one that went over the allotted time. My SP has no pad.

Its ran late 90% of the time this season, ya didn't think the finale would run late?

Its run over more than that, but most of the time, it was no biggie, since the loser was picked, and just doing the song etc... but it does go over

All those stupid acts and it ran late? American Idol producers think you'll put up with whatever crap they give you.

My TiVo HD was padded and had the entire episode, though I did have an audio dropout at the precise moment Seacrest said "Cook." So, a syllable of lip-reading for us.
The old S2 in the bedroom wasn't padded, and the recording ended less than two seconds after he said "Cook."

Maybe next year Seacrest will limit his stupid "dramatic pauses"?
It's good for us since we stripped the SP off our Tivos and won't be watching A.I. any more.

I happened to be recording this on both of our TiVos, and on the TiVo that I was watching, we only got up to "and the winner is..." -- not even the David part.
I was padding on the other TiVo, so no biggie, but it was quite funny to me that it was perfect timing.
A couple of seasons ago on "The Next Food Network Star" they did the same thing. They had Emeril with one of those big silver platter w/ a dome and just as he opened up the dome to reveal the winner, the recording ended.

Regular news watcher, or did you want to watch Dennis Ritchmond's goodbye too?
I watched it in the buffer (ffing through most of the stuff except the segments about his goodbye). I almost spoiled the Idol winner, because I started the buffer on channel 2 a few mins before 10.. (I watched it on my non-Tivo recorder, so any non-singing bits I could
watch at 1.5x with sound.. I even padded that recording a few minutes, and the recording
stopped at about the best possible point except if it were during a commercial.. I caught the missing few words from the buffer on the Tivo after watching the rest of it.)

Ours didn't record because LOST decided to put an episode on last night. A repeat but I think it was seen as a new episode because it was called enhanced. It was the last night of sweeps and I guess it bumped my idol off the list completely. What a drag!

I don't watch the show, but my wife was furious that she missed the end. She ran upstairs, cursed "the stupid Tivo" (whenever she criticizes anything electronic, she's really criticizing me :D ), and tried to find what she missed on youtube (I think she only found part of it).
She loves both our Tivos, but she tends to lash out whenever something goes wrong, even if it's not Tivo's fault.
Glad to hear it wasn't just us.

You're not alone buddy. Just be glad you weren't at my house last night when we got home to find out the Tivo (for who knows what reason?) didn't record the premier of "so you think you can dance?".
I woke up with a neck ache from the damned couch!

You'd think........ESPECIALLY with a live program. I even pad my hockey recordings by an hour because of OTs and SOs.

And to be fair, this happened on my HDVR 21 and my Series 2 Combo Units.
Live programs tend to:
Start Early
Start Late
or End after the scheduled time.
Thus pad, pad, pad. It is just the nature of the beast.
I am really shocked so many of the "faithful" on TCF do not pad!

These days I honestly do not pay attention to what's live and what's not. Especially with SP's I've had set up for nearly a decade. Not to mention, TV's just not important enough to me to check my To Do list regularly and pad everything that might need it. I expect my TiVo to sail smoothly with limited interaction from me. Yes, I understand I'm asking too much, and I'll live with the consequences of that complacency.
At this point, I do understand that TiVo can't deal with live, last-minute changes. But technologically speaking, I'd expect by now that this situation would be different, that's all. Seems like there would be PLENTY of ways a net-connected TiVo could adjust better on the fly.

TiVo's already added the pad option to live sports recordings so I would guess it wouldn't be a stretch for them to integrate the pop up like that when you schedule a live show. SPs for live shows could also have that automatically pop up when you set them up.

"American Idol" is not live on the west coast, so the pop-up does not come up for AI there, unfortunately. The "would you like to pad this live recording" popup DOES come up for AI in markets where it is shown live (it did for me in Texas), at least if you schedule it manually, don't know how it works with season passes.

The problem is when you set an SP for a show, months before the last chunk of episodes become "live events." In that case, you don't get the pop up. And why not? TiVo should send a message, like they do for other stuff (channel additions, etc.)

Except there were two shows at 10 pm for which I have Season Passes.
Just because it's live doesn't mean they can't keep the show on time. In TV's earlier days, many shows were live and they ended on time. Apparently the new producers and directors have been coddled by technology and don't know how to time a show on the fly. They could have cut the Brit's inspid little speech and gotten off on time. That speech showed the whole thing is rigged and they had to let the nasty Brit save face.

Tivo needs to auto-pad where it can, like Windows Media Center.

UltimateTV did (does) that too... I agree, this should be an option on TiVo's as well. Auto-pad by default, whenever there's no conflicts. I mean... why not?
