Perhaps this is best asked in the dbstalk.com forums but you guys are long time experts so I thought I'd ask here, first.

I'm looking at purchasing a lot in the Asheville, NC, area. I listed a contingency on my purchase offer that I can receive DirecTV - because there are quite a few trees.

Before I try customer service roulette, does anyone know if I can get DirecTV out there (for free) to do a siting and confirm that I could get service after I build - probably in a year or two? The lot does have a street address.

Yes, I could do it myself with www.dishpointer.com or with a compass, cardboard, and a straw, but I'd rather have something more definitive.

What number/phonetree prompt should I call?

Look up satellite TV service in the local phone book, find a local installer and ask how much they'd charge to do a site survey. Maybe they'll do it for free, but I doubt it, and I'm sure DirecTV won't pay for one.

You'll want to know how high the dish can be mounted and which direction the mount faces. When I had a house built in 2001, I planned the orientation so that a gable end faced south so that I could mount a dish high on a soffit and clear trees. It worked.

NC is much further south than NH, so you'll have an easier time clearing trees due to the sats being higher in the sky.
