Hi guys,
I want to sell on eBay and wondering about a few things:
1. Is it safe to leave the card in the HR10? Is there any personal information a buyer can get off the card, or is it reformatted when they sign on to Directv?
2. Since Directv is no longer servicing TIVO and the new satellite is up for HDTV, what are people buying these for, can they still be used with a Directv account?
3. My hard drive died so I replaced it about 9 months ago. It runs a bit noisier than the original but works great. Any ideas why it would be noisier. I read somewhere that the mounting screws may need to be loosened a bit.
Thanks,
Bob

1) The access card contains info on whatever PPV purchases you may have made. However, DirecTV will most likely require the new owner to buy an access card.
DirecTV will also not activate the unit if there is any balance due.
2) The HR10 can still be used for DirecTV's SD channels and the few HD ones that are MPEG2.
3) Some hard drive brands are noisier than others.

I do not recommend loosening the mounting screws - that will shorten the lifetime of the drive.
As Jim said, some brands and models of drive are noisier than others. Some brands also allow you to run a tool (when attached to a PC) that adjusts the "acoustic management" properties of the drive. I have generally found that the cheapest drives are the noisiest.

You can try adding washers (rubber, maybe composite or something) to dampen the vibration but you never want to leave the screws loose.

Interesting comment on Ebay....another question:
A guy is selling one of these and said his was an "owned" receiver and "only owned receivers can be reactivated". I purchased mine also for the $1000 price and also thought it was "owned", but recently a Directv rep said none of them are owned, fine print says even those you purchase are considered leased as it is part of the agreement when you sign up.
Any insights on this? I don't want to sell something to someone if it isn't going to work for them.

What does the online account say as the status of that unit?
If you paid the $1000 originally, then it is "owned" by you.
Call and ask a different CSR.
Any unit on eBay HAS to be owned by the seller, or they are illegally selling something that isn't their's to sell.

I had to have Directv straighten that out for me. I bought an R10 at Bust Buy but a few years later they show it as leased. The CSR said no problem, I'll fix it for you right now.
