After bringing a DirecTV Tivo out of retirement, I needed a new access card. Called up DirecTV and had one sent out. I thought the $20 charge for the card was pretty outrageous, but then I was doubly astounded to check my online activity and see that I was also charged $5 for a "phone transaction fee" since I gave them a credit card number to pay for this new card. This is especially annoying since the rep said this was the only way to pay for this item.

I'm going to email DirecTV about this since the rep quoted me a price of $20, not $20 plus an additional $5 for paying it.

Anyone else seen this before?

Email won't do much. Call Directv and ask for a supervisor and dispute the charge. Although they might say that the $5 is standard charge (normally they warn you about the total charges).

They make you use a credit card so you can't dispute the entire monthly bill. If you make enough noise (be firm but polite) they make give you a $5 credit on your bill. You could threaten to suspend your service or suspend one of your boxes (if you have more than one) for a month or 2. That might get their attention. Good Luck

$20 is the normal fee AFAIK, and it's a steal considering you used to have to pay $50 or more for cards in the past. I've never heard of anyone being charged an additional $5 fee for the transaction. This may be one of the new "service" policies being implemented by DirecTV. They provide you less service but charge you more for it. What an amazing business concept!

Next time, mail cash: "This note is legal tender for all debts, public and private".
