This will seem like a strange question, but can you use a Tivo as a device to record surveillance video, without a Tivo subscription?

No, this isn't something that I came up with on my own.

Yes, with some Series 1s ( practcially all Philips units, and Sony units manufactured before October 2001) or Toshiba/Pioneer DVD combos. Any other TiVo model requires a subscription to make recordings of any sort, All will buffer Live TV though, without a sub.

Considering the dozens of existing threads on the subject, I have no choice but to believe that you didn't come up with this on your own.

Considering that you can buy 4 channel digital surveillance video recorder (http://www.diguniverse.com/OBSERVATION-AND-SECURITY/OBSERVATION-AND-SECURITY/SCUSW242ACH.html) for under $250, why would you want to mess with TiVo?

and yet people still insist that there is no such thing as a dumb question.

Many people would rather not spend $250 if they already have equipment that will do the job or can get adequate equipment for significantly less.

we need to know the application of it as well.

If this was for a business establishment than getting the 4 channel deisgned for high volume rig is worth it.

If this is to put a camera on your yard or your nanny or something then rigging up a TiVo is well worth the savings.

I just ran across this on the costco website earlier today:

http://www.costco.com/Browse/Product.aspx?whse=BC&topnav=&prodid=11278373&ec=BC-EC877-CatHome&pos=9&lang=en-US

It's a 9-channel digital recorder for use as a security system. The setup includes nine cameras with night vision for $699.

FWIW, I'm selling a S2 DT, someone asked me if it could be used as part of a security system monitoring system, so I figured I'd ask.

Clearly someone pissed all over scandia101's Cheerios.

I read his comment to mean he's asking for someone else.

Yes, there are dumb questions. There are also dumb replies. Chill, it's just a post.

There are also dumb replies.

Making a point and proving it all in one statement, that's not easy to do.
Well done.

Chill, it's just a post.
Right back at ya.
