I saw something about this yesterday. I haven't read this story, but according to the EW story posted this weekend, Daddy got AI in lots of trouble by telling Baby David to incorporate lyrics from a different song into the lyrics he sang in his second song last week. The use of the lyrics from the other song hadn't been cleared, and it cost them a bunch of money in lawyer's fees to clean up the mess. What a tool.

+1. It's even worse than that. My understanding was that he had said he wanted to use the lyrics and the producers said no. But then he goes against what they said and had David change the lyrics anyway. What a cavalier tool!

But STILL so nice to hear. I just despise stage parents.

Archuletta used exactly ONE word from the Sean Kingston song, that being "Beautiful". He said "Girls" but in the Kingston song, it's the singular "Girl"

I can't believe Kingston or his record company would have a case against Idol.

Of course, I don't mind Daddy Archuletta getting booted, whatever the reason. :)

According to the Today Show this morning, they were saying it was because having an extra person helping Baby David, especially a trained musician, was giving him an unfair advantage in picking songs, arrangements, etc.

While I'm glad that tool has been ousted, I think that logic is totally flawed. Does a real pop star make all their music decisions themselves without any input from anyone around them?

Less likely than Kingston's camp making a lawer call is that the Idol lawyers went into action to make sure they were covered.

From what I know, one or two words and less than some amount of measures is not considered copyrighted.

Reading between the lines in what Simon has been saying, Daddy was a royal PITA.

That's more than enough.

Think Vanilla Ice, "Ice Ice Baby," which sampled Bowie's "Under Pressure." There was just a short measure that was sampled for use in "Ice Ice Baby," but it was more than enough to trigger an instant lawsuit - and Vanilla Ice had to pay out big time for it.

Girl --> Girls is quite a bit different, (if that's the gripe.) "Ice, Ice Baby" is immediately recognized because of the sampling from "Under Pressure." I was in 6th grade when that came out, and whenever I hear "Under Pressure" come on, I immediately think of "Ice Ice Baby" first.

who's to say he used words from the song and not just plain ole words? if i say 4 words in a row and they happen to be in a song am i going to owe someone money? how are we to know each and every song in the world?

When your father pushes for a lyric change, the producers say he can't, and David does it anyway, that's when you can say "he used words from the song and not just plain ole words"

That was longer and also a direct sample. Not musician's playing the same notes.

Not Bowie, Queen. Well I guess you could say Queen with Bowie.
