Yeah I have no idea why they would have even gone ahead with 90210. Gossip Girl is basically the same show and it is not doing that great in the ratings.

And think about it this way: The audience that enjoyed 90210 has grown up. Will they really still find it relevant and enjoyable?

The CW needs something that draws not only critical praise, but mainstream eyeballs. Without knowing what the actual show will be like, I think trying to capitalize on the fact that there are lots of 24-35 year olds who are very familiar with 90210 can only help the network. It will get a lot more buzz and attention than a critical darling like GG or VM ever could.

But with Jennie Garth and Lori Laughlin in it, I'll watch every episode for as long as it airs. :D

The only good thing it really has going for it ratings wise is being #1 in iTunes TV downloads.
Also what ticked me off is Reaper having the same or better ratings than GG and it being a bubble show!!! If they would have of the promotion into Reaper they put into GG they might have a mild hit on their hands.

I just noticed Miss/Guided is missing from the press release. ABC picked it up a while ago but maybe it just has no room.
If Life on Mars does well what does that mean for 'Lost'? They have a scheduled packed with shows that actually do well. It is going to be hard to squeeze them all in.

Wow. I'm surprised to see "Life on Mars" on the fall schedule. The last word I had heard about the series was that it went back for it's n-th total revamp (both cast and crew), and as a result it was looking more like a midseason show, not a fall series.
I haven't been following at all... how has Dirty Sexy Money been doing? I haven't heard any buzz about it at all... the silence is rather deafening. They could've been showing bars and tone during that time slot for all I've heard about it.
It's interesting... with the exception of "Life on Mars," there's just _nothing_ new on their schedule. It's like they decided "ok, the 2007-08 season was a writeoff... let's just try it again next year."

That will probably be a recurring theme this year--the strike effectively canceled pilot season, so any new shows will mostly be ones that were in development early.

Dirty Sexy Money, as well as Pushing Daisies, and possibly Private Practice (I'm not positive since I don't actually watch that one, but it gets recorded) - basically the entire Weds night lineup - went on extended hiatus after the strike, but to my knowledge were never in danger of not coming back. I know that DSM had 3 unaired episodes remaining but they decided to save them for the fall. Apparently it wasn't a spectacular ratings hit, but like I said, when they announced a few months ago that it wouldn't be back after the strike, they did say that it would be picked up for the fall.

Looks like all the ABC shows I watch are back. But no new shows?
Two for now
"LIFE ON MARS"
"Life on Mars" is based on the BBC series created by Matthew Graham, Tony Jordan and Ashley Pharoah. The series revolves around Sam Tyler, a modern-day police detective who, after a car crash, mysteriously finds himself transported back to 1973 and still working as a detective.
"Life on Mars" stars Jason O' Mara as Sam Tyler, Rachelle LeFevre as Annie Cartwright, Colm Meaney as Gene Hunt, Stephanie Jacobsen as Maya, Lenny Clarke as George Randall, Patrick Wenk-Wolff as Colin Raimes and Richard Benjamin as Milton Kornboll.
The series is produced by Twentieth Century Fox Television and ABC Studios. Josh Applebaum, Andre Nemec, Scott Rosenberg, Jane Featherstone, Stephen Garrett and David E. Kelley are the executive producers. The pilot episode of "Life on Mars" was executive-produced by David E. Kelley, Tommy Schlamme, Bob Breech, Jane Featherstone and Stephen Garrett, and was produced by David E. Kelley Productions in association with 20th Century Fox Television.
"OPPORTUNITY KNOCKS"
"Opportunity Knocks" is a new show that breaks the mold of typical game and reality shows. We will be showing up on America's doorstep and testing how well they know their family. Our mobile team will arrive at "Anywhere, America" in a semi-truck that is full of flat screen TVs, new furniture and big cash prizes that the family can win right there. We will take the action of a game show directly into our contestants' homes, setting up shop in a family's front lawn. The instant our host, JD Roth, knocks on the front door, the game will begin. Hollywood will invade a suburban neighborhood, and each week one lucky family will play the game of a lifetime in front of all their friends and neighbors.
The host poses trivia questions to family members based directly on their lives, each other and articles found in and around their home. If they're able to prove they know their family inside and out, they'll win the prizes of their dreams.
Executive producers for "Opportunity Knocks" are Ashton Kutcher, Jason Goldberg, Karey Burke, J.D. Roth and Todd A. Nelson. "Opportunity Knocks" is produced by Katalyst Films and 3 Ball Productions.

I'm pretty disappointed with the offerings so far from NBC and ABC. I've gone through the shows they've got on their schedule and I've only got Chuck, Heroes, and Ugly Betty. There are a couple of other new ones I might check out if nothing better comes along in those time slots (My Own Worst Enemy, Crusoe, Kath & Kim, Life on Mars). Nothing for me to be excited about though. Hopefully the other networks will offer more.
Last year was so much more exciting for me at this time, checking in on all the new shows. This year...nothin'. My viewing schedule is consistently full with 2 or more shows each hour during prime time. It's looking pretty bare so far. Damn strike!

I assume Dancing With the Stars will not run all year, and Lost will fill one of its time slots (and Scrubs half of the other one) when its Fall 2008 edition ends.

I'm really bummed about Shark! I still have all episodes of Moonlight but I guess I can delete them now. We usually don't procrastinate in watching the first couple episodes of a show like that but did with that one for some reason.
I feel the same way about Dirty Sexy Money as some of the other posters. Not great, but good enough to keep watching. I wouldn't have been terribly disappointed if it had been cancelled (like I am about Shark!). The characters aren't necessarily likeable people but are interesting in some ways. I think the point of them being so repulsive in some ways (but with some occasional redeeming qualities) is so you understand how Peter Krause's character feels.

Zap2it's article said that the 10:00 Tuesday slot has not done well in a while so they're moving Without A Trace there. And I guess they wanted to give the new show on Thursdays at 10 a good lead-in.
Just watch them back to back on the same night and they'll still be paired for you. :-)

Is CBS still carrying football on Sundays? The Unit might suffer the same fate that Without a Trace did in my house when they moved. I refuse to pad a show for three hours in the hopes of being to watch it, so I just stop watching anything that gets moved around because of the NFL.

Don't pad "the unit" itself, record the news and pad it, if you don't need it, you can delete it leaving "the unit" untouched and not bloated.

This is why I was hoping it was airing at 9pm. It would be less work to pad the end of the Unit to catch TAR and Unit that to adjust two different recordings to catch both. I think this could really hurt the ratings if the show is going to be running until 11:30 or later on a Sunday night.

As much as I resisted giving up most of my TiVos for DirecTV HD-DVR's, one thing I love about them is being able to have two recordings going on the same channel at the same time using only one tuner. So my 1-hour-later pad on Cold Case can record at the same time as the 10:00 show (previously WAT or Shark) and still allow another show to record on another channel on the 2nd tuner. So I've had a 1-hour pad on both Cold Case and whatever has followed it. I just leave it like that all the time, because college basketball and golf cause delays occasionally, too. Not every week like the NFL, but often enough. It does take up more recording space since each one is 2 hours, but we just make it a point to watch those shows sooner than others if the hard drives start to get full.

Nikki Finke is reporting (http://www.deadlinehollywooddaily.com/primetime-pilot-panic-moonlight-on-cw/) that there are talks to have Moonlight move to the CW's Sunday night lineup...
Sorry, not going to happen, from Zap2it:
http://www.zap2it.com/tv/news/zap-cbscancelsmoonlight,0,6764293.story
“Tassler also put the kibosh on a report that The CW is interested in picking up the show as part of its farmed-out Sunday schedule, which is being programmed by independent producer Media Rights Capital. "Probably not, no," was Tassler's response to a question about the rumored move.
The CW unveiled the titles of two comedies and two dramas for Sunday night at its upfront party Tuesday night; "Moonlight" wasn't among them.“

So if you record Cold Case with an hour long pad, and the 10pm recording for an hour..
Does that count as 3 hours of disk space being used, or is the 'overlap' hour somehow shared between the two recordings, and actually only deleted when you delete BOTH of them?

So if you record Cold Case with an hour long pad, and the 10pm recording for an hour..Why would you want to do that?
Just record the 9PM show normally and pad the 10PM show for an hour.
Worse comes to worse and the Sunday shows are delayed, you have the wrong show (or part of the wrong show) recorded in each segment. But as long as you watch them in order, it doesn't really matter.

Well, it's 4 hours total, because I also pad the 10:00 show for an hour. They are only shared in the sense that while they're recording, audio/video from the same tuner is being saved into two separate "files." So in this case, everything from 10:00 - 11:00 is duplicated on the hard drive.
What's cool is that even without padding, when back-to-back shows are on the same channel, it automatically records a few seconds of overlap, which is nice if there's actual show content at the hour or half-hour mark.
Why would you want to do that?

The main reason is in case the 10:00 show isn't on or is a repeat. It's also nice for convenience to have the entire show in one recording. If hard drive space were an issue I might not do it this way.

Sure, it's better to have the show in one recording.
I usually record all the CBS shows on Sunday night (7-11PM) and so I'll check the TiVo to ensure that all shows are scheduled to record. If football or whatever might delay the start, then I'll usually pad the 10PM show by 1.5h. If I'm home on Sunday night, I'll check the 60 Minutes recording to see if it really has been delayed (and by how much) and use that as a guideline to adjust the pad on the 10PM show...

Yeah, as much as I like being able to set up long pads and not have to worry about missing anything, more often than not I'll end up shortening or removing the padding. If I think of it during the week, I'll check and see whether there's a late CBS game in the first place. Then on Sundays I'm usually watching football right up until the end, so if I see what time 60 Minutes starts, I'll shorten the padding if the overrun isn't too long. If I'm really ambitious, I'll even set up manual recordings of just over an hour.
Hard drive space isn't an issue as far as the two extra hours on any given week, but it could become one if I had those 4 hours recording week after week and we were getting several weeks behind on shows, as we do every year. This year has been much easier due to the writers strike.

The "padding" snafu that hit me was I had orignally set up "Shark" with a one hour pad when it was on Sunday nights and when they changed the night it airs, I didn't change the padding. Not a big deal, but it's nicer to just use one hour for the recording instead of two - epsecially when it's airing in a set one-hour time slot! Won't have to worry about that one any more. :(

Yeah, i didn't know about the change until after it had happened, but fortunately it's on at 10:00 (right?) so if anything was bumped, it was repeats of Fresh Prince or something my kids record multiple times a day.

I noticed on the new Fox schedule that Are You Smarter Than a Fifth Grader? and Don't Forget the Lyrics are not on the January-May schedule.
Has anybody seen any commercials for casting calls for another new group of fifth graders? I haven't, and I don't see anything on Fox's official show website that says they are looking; I assume that they're going to tape additional episodes for next fall with the current group, and then cancel the series in December (although they might show reruns on Sundays at 7 once Fox's NFL coverage ends). This is strange, as I thought it had decent ratings.
This doesn't quite rate a BIH Fox...how about:
Eat in Hell's Kitchen, Fox
EDIT: A Fox press release over at TheFutonCritic describing the new season says that the third season will have a new set of fifth graders. This could be in part because there is another report that says the show's season premiere will be on August 29 - Fox will be starting a few shows (including Prison Break and Bones) that week (choose an excuse: in order to capitalize on NBC's coverage of the Summer Olympics, which ends August 24; to give people something new to watch before the Democratic National Convention coverage that week, which usually starts at 10 Eastern, except on the Thursday as that is when the nominee's acceptance speech so it starts earlier, and "coincidentally" Fox does not have a season premiere scheduled for that night).
(And is 2008-09 finally the last year for King of the Hill? I assume it depends on (a) whether or not either Sit Down, Shut Up or The Cleveland Show (both of which start "in the spring" - I assume that means "May 3, 2009") does well enough to get extended until May 2010, and (b) if it's just The Cleveland Show, whether Fox thinks three Seth MacFarlane shows is too many and drops American Dad, even though it has higher ratings than KOTH.)

I haven't been following at all... how has Dirty Sexy Money been doing? I haven't heard any buzz about it at all... the silence is rather deafening. They could've been showing bars and tone during that time slot for all I've heard about it.
Was the best new show launched last year. Too bad it did not get more attention. Although it is likely one of the shows the strike saved. If the strike never happened, its middling ratings might have gotten it canceled, but it was critically reviewed pretty highly, and of people who watched it regularly well-regarded.

Very cool, even with the "extra" disk space usage. (That's not really fair, since duplicating the disk space in each recording really is the obvious way of doing it.. But I guess it must be duplicating the data all along, since you could delete the 9-11pm recording at 11:00:01, right? It's not like it has to afterwards go back and duplicate the data.)
With the second feature, I would probably remove a lot of the padding that I do. e.g. CBS Mondays, I pad each show pre and post 1 minute.. (I think I may remove the very beginning and very end of the 2 hours, since those seem to start/end on time.)

Right, each recording is being saved separately to its own "file" in the list of recordings. It just so happens that for that hour, the same data stream is being saved to two separate recordings. You could be doing the same thing with shows on another channel and have 4 recordings going at the same time.

I have heard various "official" versions of this, but the two that stick out seem to be (1) the producers wanted to go in a different direction, and (2) one of the producers felt that "that girl from Are You Smarter Than a Fifth Grader?" was distracting viewers from the "main characters".
My guess is, once they got to the "they have to tell Gracie who her father is" part of the storyline, they didn't want Gracie to be the independent girl she was in the first few episodes, so they replaced Laura with somebody younger-looking (not to mention shorter).

Last year, for the first few weeks before Viva Laughlin and subsequently The Amazing Race began, they had 90-minute episodes of 60 Minutes starting at 7:30 eastern, some of which started on time, and some of which did not. Also, on the FOX doubleheader weekends, the schedule could still be delayed if your home team plays the late game on CBS. Even with a 4:05 start (vs. 4:15) a delay is highly likely.
