My unmodified HDVR2 is sometimes loosing all color in the picture. It happens randomly, and doesn't matter if we are watching live tv or recorded programming. Given enough time, the color returns, or if we turn the tv off for 30 seconds, and back on, the color usually returns. We know it isn't the tv as we just replaced it with a new set (upgraded to HD), and this problem still happens. I've also been seeing some pixelation in shows, which leads me to believe the hard drive is also acting up. Suggestions?

Common problem with loose or defective SVideo cable or connector. Are you using an SVideo connection from the DVR to your TV? Have you tried new cables?

I am running the SVideo cable. Hadn't considered swapping it out for a new one. I'll give that a go tonight if I can find a cable around the house, otherwise, I'll need to pick one up this weekend.
Thanks!

try toggling the yellow pause button for 5 seconds, the color will return.

Mine does this once and a while in spurts. It is most noticeable on the tv's connected via the coax. I have never noticed it on the projector connected via svideo to the same hdvr2.
The instant replay button seems to bring the color back after a few presses.

funny mine just started to do this today. No svideo because of known pic/sound issues. New < 6mos hd from weakness. If I pause does not return color. If I power cycle color for about two minutes.

If you have had your unit for less than 6 months return your unit to www.weaknees.com for repair. It is still under warranty. If you have had it longer send it to CCS corp for repair, TiVo is their specialty. A reasonable fixed rate repair($100.) and your Directv TiVo is returned as good as new.

Good Luck.

Well I'm really not concerned. Everytime issues arise and I read oh its the tuner, or the hard drive is failing it ends up being a tivo software thing or dtv service. now at 6.f. if it is hardware then bye bye dtv, no big dea

This just happened to my R10 last night.
Something similar happened years ago and jiggling the S-Video cable fixed it (at the TV itself--either a bad connector on the cable or a bad jack on the TV). But last night no amount of jiggling would fix it, so I switched over to composite video. Still B&W.
I unplugged for 30 seconds and rebooted. The Welcome screen was in glorious color, and so I figured that was that. A few minutes later it happened again, but this time I saw it happen. It didn't just go from color to B&W; it transitioned to it in about 10 seconds or so with alternating fields of distorted color. So then we watched about 45 minutes in B&W and suddenly the color came back. I wasn't actively doing anything at the time. I tested it this morning and the color is still OK.

My R10 would lose color (I would usually have to reboot) then I tried changing to... I think it was channel 201 (one of the Directv help channels) and the color would return, How's that for weird?

Mine is connected via coax cable. It began that "losing color" thing last year (when a lot of us started having random reboots).
When it happens, I press the pause button and the color instantly comes back. But if I accidentally hit another button (like the play or FF, etc) then it will take a while before the color comes back. Weird, but I'm sure its software-related...
