I finally decided to install Tivo Desktop 2.6.1 to all my Vista Ultimate PCs after patchy results with 2.3a. I am also running Galleon 2.3. Well all the issues with 2.3a have disappeared. I did uninstall TD 2.3a as well as use the Desktop Cleaner Utility and on all 3 Desktops and 1 laptop the installations went fine, no error messages, all services running well etc. So if you are at TD2.3a and nervous to change I can say "go ahead".

Well, after a week everything is still fine. Transfers to and from Tivo are OK and fast. Tivo Desktop Plus Web downloads (and what a selection!) are working great (shame you can't save them to PC). Good job Tivo!!

Oh! and I wonder if this is a coincidence but I installed a new Weaknees.com drive a few days before I did the Tivo Desktop upgrade. Also, so far the previous annoying problem with Desktop not being able to "Pick recordings to transfer" due to lack of storage (memory) on the DVR has also disappeared.

UPDATE:

Well now we are 2 weeks into the new software. Couple of occasions when transfers from Tivo to PC stopped + 2 Web videos that terminated being saved on the Tivo prematurely - other than that so far, so good.

UPDATE 2:

Now into 4 weeks - had one problem with an Unbox download. Also sees my IMAC.

I just installed it (after running the cleaner utility) to my Windows XP Home Media Edition. I restarted the tivos, and the the pc and the tivos still don't see each other. I tried following the directions at tivo support for troubleshooting the install. One of the steps was to for to File, Link to my tivo account. When I did that it said I have to upgrade to desktop plus. So, to transfer programs between my tivo and my pc, do I have to upgrade to tivo desktop plus? Or am I still running into the Home Media Edition problem of that particular version of XP not letting programs transfer back and forth.

I can still transfer programs from the tivo to my pc with tivo playlist, but I can't transfer anything back to the tivo. I also can't see my pictures or play my music via the tivo.

You don't need plus for TTG.

I have the tivo plus 2.6.1 but I don't use it for video transfers to the tivo anymore. I use pytivo which seems to work a lot better than the tivo plus does for transferring all types of videos. I do use the plus feature for the web transfer feature on Tivo.

One major flaw I ran into with the plus was that with one of the avi videos that I tried to transfer, the tivo would start the video transfer, the blue light would come on on the S3 and things seem to be ok for 1 or 2 minutes but the green status bar would not fill up and the light eventually went out. I thought tivo had stopped transferring the file. I was wrong because it was still transferring the file, it just wasn't telling me it was still transferring the file.

Tivo also showed the file as only being partially recorded with only 1 minute recorded however when I played the video, the video played the full 30 minutes but the status bar was empty and always showed 0 for the time movement and I could not fast forward or reverse the playback so I gave up on the desktop and went back to using pytivo.

I had always used the Tivo Desktop but I tried using Pytivo after reading these boards. I have not been able to get Pytivo to function at all so I'm back to TD. I do use Galleon and it is a bit more stable/reliable than TD but not by much. My two cents...

TiVo Desktop works just fine with Vista. I'm guessing all the problems I have on my desktop pc are because of the Windows XP home media edition. I set up my laptop yesterday, and the laptop and the TiVos see each other just fine. I haven't tried transferring anything yet, but I don't anticipate any problems. I'll try that out tonight.

The new version of TiVo Desktop is working great with my new laptop. I can transfer shows back and forth between the two just fine. Finally!

as some of you...I can't get TD2.6 or TD2.5 to "stay running" for any length of time...it will run properly for at most a couple of days, then I have to re-install and then the same story, over and over again. I'm running XP. My best guess is that if TD can't start right away when the computer is acquiring its wireless IP address, that it just time's out, but I'm no computer guru by any means.

The error message I get is "transfer server not running" and basically have to do a re-install to get it working.

Frustrating to be sure.

What version of XP are you running? For me it ran fine on XP Professional, but not on XP Home Media Edition. The version I'm running now is Vista Home Premium. So far it's running fine on that.
