View Full Version : Movies keep skipping

So I've been converting my movies using DVDShrink and DVD Fab Platinum so I can load them up to my TiVo Series 2. I'm not doing any compression all I'm doing is ripping my movies and then changing the name of the extension from VOB to MPG. I'm using my wireless network to transfer them over.
Everything works great except there's a lot of times during the movies where they skip. Its just a tiny skip but it gets annoying. What could be causing this? Should I try something else when I rip them or could it be a problem with my network?

I think using tivo desktop plus will fix this.

How?
It seems to have fixed that problem for me. I think converting the file to a .ts file might fix it to. you can do that with video redo.

What is a .ts file?

What is a .ts file?
MPEG transport stream
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MPEG_transport_stream
you can make one with video redo. try it out and see what happens.

Here's where I'm at right now.
I don't think I can load a .ts file from my Mac and have Tivo recognize it. So I went a different route and had VideoRedo do a Quickstream fix on a file and then loaded that "cleaned" version to the Tivo. I beleive the skipping has been alleviated. I'm going to clean another VOB file and load that up and see if that works.
My next step is to see if there's a free program out there that will rip a movie and not require me run a Quickstream fix on it. Any ideas?

I use the same tools and had the same issue.
Get VideoReDo (http://www.videoredo.com/en/index.htm), load the .mpg file you end up with a do a Quick Stream Fix.
The resulting file should upload and play fine.

It definitely does. Is there a one step fix to this issue though? I'd like to rip a DVD and not have to send it through VideoReDo if possible, or does VideoReDo rip dvds too?

Ok, so VideoReDo definitely works, and I found that DVD Fab gives you a VOB file (although uncompressed) that doesn't skip.
Now my problem is trying to find some toolset that does everything I need it to do. Basically, I'd like it to decrypt a dvd, and then rip it to one compressed vob file that doesn't skip. I havent found anything yet that will do all this for me. Any ideas out there?

I have had good luck using Handbrake on a Mac, but when using windows I get stuttering video no matter which combination of codecs and settings I use. I don't think a one-step solution exists. I've been trying to find one for some time now.

I gave up on the one step solution bc while Handbrake works, on my 4 year old Powerbook it takes forever and day to rip/convert. Out of curiosity though, what settings did you use to get it to mpeg2?
The 2 step process I use now is rip with DVDFab and then use Mpeg Streamclip (which is free) to join the VOB files into one mpeg2 file. It works for the most part however sometimes it introduces some sound issues where it fades in and out at certain points in the movie.

Using handbrake I just transcoded into a divx file for space.
But if you're just going for a one step mpeg-2 from DVD solution, you should try this (http://www.zatznotfunny.com/dvdshrink.htm).

Been there, done that and never going back. DVDShrink isnt supported anymore which means it blows when it comes to ripping new movies and it introduced all kinds of timecode issues. Every single one of the movies I ripped had problems.

Although it does not always do the audio fade (actually an audio drop....no audio at all) on my mpg's, when it does fade it is always at a point in the movie when there is a scene change. For instance, there might be people talking in a dark indoor scene, then the audio will drop out for 1-3 seconds, as the scene in the movie switches to, say, a outdoors shot in the woods. Very strange.
This problem occurs on about 25% of my mpg transfers. The other 75% of the time it works perfectly.
(I use DvdFab to rip an uncompressed dvd, then use either DvdShrink or VobMerge to combine all the vobs into one, then rename the vob to an mpg).
