I need help. I am thinking about getting TiVo, because it is way to much to upgrade my direct tv and I was wondering if I can watch a different show than what I am recording? Can anyone help me?

Probably. What do you have cable? DirectTV? I'm confused.

if you want to keep directv then you should consider one of their dvr's. It will allow you to record two channels at once and play back a recorded show at the same time. If you buy the Tivo you will need a subscription to Tivo. That may cost more than upgrading your directv to a dvr.

Get a DirecTV DVR. Since you don't currently have a TiVo, you won't be influenced by the differences in the user interfaces. Also, you won't have the potential problems with missed channel changes.

If you currently have just a regular DirecTV receiver (not a DVR), adding a TiVo won't get you the ability to watch/record a second channel. I agree with the advice to get a DirecTV DVR.
