I have an HD Tivo that I purchased new in December of 2007. At the time I prepaid 12 months of service. What is the best way to go about selling this unit? Do I cancel my service and probably forfeit my pre-paid money? In this case can it be re-activated by someone else? I seem to remember Tivo not allowing service to be transferred to another owner unless it was a lifetime subscription.

You are correct you can't xfer the non lifetime service to another BUT you can sell it to a person that you tell they will have free service until December 08, after that they can put whatever service they want on the TiVo. Until they put their own service on the TiVo they will not be able to use MRV on-line scheduling and some other account types of TiVo service. You have to remember to cancel the TiVo service in December or you will start getting charged for service, that will be you biggest problem.

Or alternatively, if that TiVo unit is the only TiVo on the account, you could change all of the contact info, login details, and billing info on the account over to the buyer's name.

If the new owner did not change the credit card that went with the account than watch out, if the buyer was willing to give the seller his credit card number so the seller could change it OK but who would do that, you can't change the credit card on a TiVo unless its a valid card, would you trust the new owner to put his card on the TiVo ? The OP would not know if it were done once he xfered the account to another person as the OP could not access the account anymore. I would never xfer any account that had my credit card on it.

Actually the credit card attached to the account has been canceled, it's no longer valid.

What happens then is that TiVo will run the charge for about 3 months then, not being paid, will lock up the TiVo so it can't be activated until the back payments are made, you want to cancel the unit yourself in December as the safest (an honorable) way to handle this.
