Black screen during playback + recording

My daughter owns a TiVo 40 hr Series 2. Recently during playback and live TV she is getting a black screen and at other times it will just lock up and freeze on the image. She can't ff or rewind through it and has had to unplug the unit to force it to reboot.

Can someone please tell me what might be wrong?

These are the typical symptoms of a dying TiVo hard drive. Buy a new bare drive and format yourself using Instant Cake, or else buy one that's pre-formatted from vendors such as DVR Upgrade or Weaknees.
