I am trying to install Tivo Desktop 2.6 but I keep getting the following error message "Error 1402. Could not open key: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\MediaPlayer\MLS\Extens ions. Verify that you have sufficient access to that key or contact your support personnel."
If anyone has any suggestions let me know. Thanks

Yes, it seems that there is something wrong with wmp. When I got to regedit I get an error for everthing under Window media player saying An error is preventing this key from being opened. I am just hoping there is some way around this considering you can not just uninstall WMP in vista.

Go here and see if you can download a new copy of WPM and install it. It might fix the regedit error.

Administrator on Vista does not give you administrative rights.
You probably have to open regedit as an administrator.
Start->Programs->Accessories-> right click CMD and choose Run As Administrator
then type regedit
There may be a more direct way, but I don't know it. :)
Edit: actually, I just tried opening that key without issue with w/o doing a Run As...
Edit2:

Apparently regedit always opens as administrator unlike CMD. (At least that is the way it appears, since it prompt with UAC thingie)
But the Ctrl-Shift-Enter trick from the run search box is a neat little trick.

That shouldn't matter. Install an older version and if it works, do the update from inside WMP afterwards.

My WMP is at 11.0.6001.7000.
Not sure it would hurt to install an older version, it will probably update with Windows Update.

I can not install an older version because it says a newer version is already installed.

I just muddled my way through this problem this evening. I ran regedit, then found the key mentioned in the error message:
"HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\MediaPlayer\MLS\Extens ions"
I right clicked on "extensions" then went to "permissions", then under "groups and user names", clicked "add" then entered "everyone" then I clicked "ok". Make sure "full control" is checked and then hit "ok". Thats what I finally stumbled upon, and it worked for me. Desktop installed like a champ after that. Make sure you back up your registry before making any changes!!!!!!
