Tivo Desktop 2.61 was working just fine with Vista, transferring stuff to PC no problem.

Then, I woke from a nap today to discover my internet connection was lost. Had to reset router and re-establish network internet connections.

Reset TiVo and router, and DVR (Series 2) shows that it is communicating with the network 100%, and it connects and starts to gather the videos, gets to 11 of 22, freezes, and then I get the error message:

There was an error while attempting to retrieve data from the selected DVR.

TiVo Desktop is unable to contact the DVR. This could be due to network problems, or the DVR might not be set to allow transfers. To check the DVR settings, go to www.tivo.com, then select "Manage my Account," and "DVR Preferences"

Everything appears to be set up as it should be. Everything was working fine until sometime between 11:58am and 1:30pm when I lost my internet connection and had to reset my cable modem and reboot my router.

I have rebooted computer, uninstalled and reinstalled TiVo software, connected TiVo to network. Everything I can think of looks fine, and remember DVR is at first connected to, but loses the connection midway and then can't be found.

I also tried installing it on an XP SP2 machine. Same thing is happening. Starts to connect, shows count of videos on DVR, then freezes and says it can't find the DVR. If it can't find it, how does it know how many recordings there are?

I changed no settings on anything.

That sounds like a fire wall issue. Can you check it in the windows firewall?

Actually, the problem corrected itself. I am not sure what caused it to begin with, because I didn't change anything, just gave up and then checked again this morning.

I am happy it is fixed, but concerned about what caused it to begin with.

I have this problem regularly, only it doesn't fix itself. i found this website because I was searching for a place to complain about Tivo's crappy customer service while I was on hold for 45 minutes. Unfortunately, it's as much help as Tivo's customer "service". Mine will be for sale on eBay next week in case any of you dorks wants to buy one.

To me, the symptoms seem to indicate an issue with the connection between the tivo and the desktop. You don't say if you are wireless or wired, but my wireless connection will often drop out (for reasons I haven't determined), and if the connection is being bad, Tivo Desktop will throw errors similar to what you mention.

bsr4767, welcome to the forums. Sorry to hear your initial experiences haven't been very positive. Selling your tivo on ebay because of initial headaches seems sort of extreme. In general, tivo offers a wonderful user experience, and it seems like a waste to discard it so quickly.
