Re: Buzzing in Panasonic PT60LC14 (LCD Projection Television)

I have a buzzing coming from the TV. It occurs via the television, not coming thru the surround system. All components (PS3, Home Theater) are turned off.

I have Cablevision as my provider and I view everything using my TIVO - but I did not change any of the TIVO settings at all. The set has been absolutely amazing since I purchased it a few years ago and never had any trouble until right now.

I checked the connections on the back and the problem is stemming from the GREEN (Y) COMPONENT OUT connection [going] from my TIVO to my R AUDIO IN-L (Y) on my TV. When I remove this connection the buzzing stops. But I also lose my picture. When I put it back in, the buzzing starts again but the picture goes back on.

Any idea what the problem could be?

Thanks,

Ben

(3) Component cables are all video; red-green-blue. You should have (2) separate cables for audio;red-white.

so red/white go from comp out on the TIVO to what area on my tv?

and the other three go from where to where?

red (right)/white(left) are your stereo audio. They go from audio out from Tivo to audio in on your TV.

The component cables red (different red), green, and blue are component video out from your Tivo. Those got to the component video in on your TV

Is this a DVD combo Tivo or an S3/TivoHD? Most other Tivos do NOT even have component video. In those cases you would just use the single yellow composite, or S-Video for video.

Not all TVs have component (red-green-blue) video in either. Maybe you shouldn't be using component at all. In which case just use S-Video.

Ok

I checked all connections and they are correct, just as greg burns said they should be. No matter which slot I use, as soon as I remove the GREEN connector plug, the buzzing stops - be it in COMPONENT SLOT 1,2,3 or 4. As I said before, when I do this, I lose the picture.

So, I am buying an S Video to S Video cable and will connect the TIVO to my HDTV using this method.

My wife is at the store now picking one up. I will post agin as soon as I install it

Thanks

Which model TiVo do you have?

Sounds like something is shorting and/or a cable is failing and/or getting interference. Did you have any power surges or weather storms lately?

TIVO Series 3HD

no storms
no power surges that I was aware of
all cable look clean
no burning, smell, etc

Oh, you have a Series 3 TivoHD...

Using S-Video you will not be able to get an HD picture on your TV!

Does your HD TV had an HDMI connector? Use that for a single connection of video and sound with one cable. The original S3 comes with one in the box. A TivoHD does not. You'll have to buy one.

The tv only has one HDMI and I use that for my PS3

You can buy a simple switch for HDMI w/o having to go full blown with a switching receiver.

There are much cheaper 2 port ones as well.

Or you could try a different set of component cables. The S-Video will work but you won't get HD output.

it didn't work:mad:

I connected S Video out to S Video in on my tv and it still buzzed

I pulled the green connector on the tv and the picture went out

I changed the input slots on the tv remote, got a picture but no sound

changed slots back to the original

Removed S video line, buzz stopped

Put S video line back in, buzz started again

What the F***!!!!:mad::mad::mad:

So you don't have the component cables connected at all and the buzz continues?

Unplug everything but the S-video. Including the cable (from cable co.) into the Tivo. Maybe a ground-loop of some sort.

OK - for some unknown reason the buzzing just stopped! I have no idea what the hell I did but the buzzing is gone. The funny thing is the set-up is EXACTLY as it was when I started this thread!

Now, in order to avoid this in the future I have an idea (very dangerous). Since my HDTV only has one HDMI slot and that is being used to connect my PS3, I want to buy an HDMI switcher to connect the TIVO to the television.

The two that I am looking at are:

http://www.buy.com/prod/joytech-tri-link-3-port-hdmi-switch-with-remote-3-to-1-switch-between/q/loc/108/204972580.html

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000LH2FH8/ref=pd_cp_e_1?pf_rd_p=250313801&pf_rd_s=center-41&pf_rd_t=201&pf_rd_i=B000SQ3D5A&pf_rd_m=ATVPDKIKX0DER&pf_rd_r=0YEZQMAFXPJP1V919031

Now, are these endemic strictly to the PS3 or can they be used universally for a TIVO or any other HDMI related device?

Thanks

You may want to search or start a new thread in the S3 forum. S3s seem to be real picky with HDMI stuff. Not saying any of those would be a problem, but somebody must be using one that is known to work problem free already...

You can get much better prices from Monoprice.com. I personally use this particular 2 into 1 switcher. (http://www.monoprice.com/products/product.asp?c_id=101&cp_id=10110&cs_id=1011001&p_id=2786&seq=1&format=2) I love it for its simplicity, and needs no external power. It works great with my Toshiba HD-A3 HD-DVD and Sony BDP-S300 BluRay players.

Monoprice's full HDMI switcher selection here. (http://www.monoprice.com/products/subdepartment.asp?c_id=109&cp_id=10110)

If you stick with HDMI 1.3 certified stuff you should be fine.

How funny that you guys mentioned monoprice.com I just ordered the following from them on Monday:

A) HDMI 1.3a Category 2 Certified Cable 28AWG - 6ft w/Ferrite Cores (Gold Plated Connectors)

B) 5X1 Enhanced HDMI Switch with built-in Equalizer (REV.2.1)

Their prices are fantastic and when I called them I was connected to a tech rep very quickly who guided me in buying the correct HDMI switcher for my needs.

Now that the buzzing has stopped I am hoping not only that it continues that way but that my picture is even better than I thought it was [now that I will have a direct HDMI connection from my TIVO to my set). :)

I want to thank ALL of you for your help. Trust me, I am pretty good when it comes to tech stuff but there are times when you go to the experts and get the help that you really need. You guys provided me wit that advice and pointed me in the right direction

Peace.

Is the buzzing coming from the TiVo or the TV? I've never heard any buzzing from my TiVos or from any of my TVs. Six of my current TiVos are using HDMI and I've never heard any buzzing, well I guess I did once from an old HD set, but that had to do with the backlight. I had to rasie the level of the backlight to get rid of that sound which was a common problem with those HP LCD sets.

I would disconnect the Tivo and just connect the coax cable from the wall directly to your TV to see if the buzzing is still there. If it is then you know it's the TV and not the Tivo.

Also might want to try disconnecting the PS3 and see if it buzzes with just TiVo connected.
