I've been having many of the same problems listed on the forums here. Sluggish response to remote, choppy playback, random reboots, freezes. I've come to hate my Tivo in the last 6 months, and the problems have gotten worse. The hard drive completely died tonight. I don't know if it was the hard drive or the software.
I had an extra IDE hard drive laying around, so I purchased Instantcake and installed. I ran into minor problems, but was able to troubleshoot them all in a couple of hours. Now my Tivo is back to functioning how I remember it. No sluggishness, not choppiness, no restarts.
Of course, now I want to keep the software exactly how it is. My question - do I need to connect the phone line at all?

It was a mixture of both (mostly harddrive).

At 6.2x now? Leave the phone line unplugged and either hack the box to negate the messages or delete them daily.

If you have 6.2x software, it is FAR more reliable than the garbage Directv is sending now. You'll be much happier with the phone line disconnected. Mine have both been disconnected from the phone line for 2 years now.

No. Only if you want to order PPV using your remote control. Otherwise just order via DirecTV's web site at no extra cost.

+ if you order at DirecTV.com, it plays the movie on all your receivers if you have more than one.

Heh. I believe I have the only household in America with only one tv (and therefore only one receiver). Heck, my Tivo with dual channel inputs means no conflict over the tv and no need to buy a second tv. Is wonderful! When it works correctly, that is... which it does now.
Thanks for the info on PPV! I hardly ever use it, but it's nice to have the option.
