This is a 2 part question.
1. My r10 has been acting up for a while. it would occasionally just freeze up and I would have to unplug it and then plug it back in to get it to power up, it would then be fine for a while. Today I turned on my t.v. and there was no power at all on my r10 receiver. I unplugged it and it went to the powering up screen, then to the just a few more minutes screen, the screen then goes blank and after a couple of minutes it shuts itself off totally. I tried several times and it will not power on.
2. If this is a hard drive issue can I take the hard drive from a stand alone Tivo unit and use it to replace the hard drive in my r10.
Any help would be appreciated.

Yep, that's a sure sign of a failed hard drive. The unit is unable to boot from the drive, which is why the 'few more mins' screen pops up, then eventually shuts down after there is no response from the drive.
I don't think you can hot swap a standalone Tivo drive into a R10. You'll need to buy a R10 image to format the drive, or if you're not skilled, you can buy a preformatted R10 hard drive from the site sponsor to swap out on your R10.

Thanks for quick response. I was hoping I could just swap out the drives but I knew it wouldn't be that easy. I know I don't want to swap it out for a newer dvr I like my Tivo way to much to switch.

Couple places to buy ready made drives... I bought one from Weaknees... also, while opening the unit anyway, think about buying a new fan to start "fresh" after you blow out all the dust bunnies

Well I solved one problem, after unplugging the power cord and plugging back in several times I thought oh well thats it. I then thought maybe I'll press the standby button DUH !! well guess what it worked, turns out my son was being a nice guy and dusting for my and must have pressed the standby button. It works for now but I know I still have the problem with the screen freezing up that has been going on for a while so I know need to still replace my hard drive before it goes totally out.

One thing I forgot to mention when the screen freezes I can still access and play any programs that have been recorded and they play just fine. It's just the regular feed that freezes and I cannot watch anything on either tuner. It seems kind of odd that I can still watch recorded programs, if the hard drive was locking up seems everything would be down. Is this still a hard drive issue or a Directv issue? I have another R10 hooked up in another room and have no problems at all with it. Thanks for you input.

Check both receivers... what version are they running?
If your running 6.3e or 6.3f, there is a problem with it freezing up. May not be a hard drive issue. Although DTV has yet to admit to it. If you have 6.1 or another version, then it very well could be the hard drive or something else.
If you do have an earlier version then it's probably not plugged into a phone line. DON'T plug it in. This is a good thing.
Also, what area do you live in?

They both have version 6.3f but only the one is freezing up. It is the farthest away from the dish, i don't know if this has anything to do with it or not.

It very well could be the hard drive is starting to go.
You can get a replacement drive from Weaknees or DVRUpgrade. Very easy to replace.
Just curious, what area do you live in?
There is a big problem with 6.3f here in the Raleigh/Durham, NC viewing area. I've also seen a few posts for Atlanta, NY, and Conn. with the same symptoms.
