So after weeks of being in jail it looks like there will be weeks when he will be in a coma. The show is still funny but it is getting too far from its roots and needs to get back on track.
But that's just my humble opinion.

I agree. The time in jail wasn't bad, but I think they have already dragged this coma thing out too long.

I agree. Get back to the roots, quickly.
The concept of Earl's idea of the "ideal life" resembling a sitcom with stupid formulaic humor and a grotesque laugh track had me rolling on the floor last week. But it's a one-episode (or two-episode, at best) joke. It's gonna wear thin if they continue it.
It was especially funny as a one-time joke, however, since, as I understand it, the creators of "Earl" fought NBC tooth-and-nail to not have a laugh track. The suits at NBC wanted one. So, the joke let the creators have a nauseating parody of a laugh-track to demonstrate how much better "Earl" was without one! ;)
As for this episode, "Randy plays detective" made for a great story, but Earl in a coma, and his sitcom fantasy will get old if it continues much longer.

The writers seem lost and seem to be just throwing anything up against the wall and seeing what sticks. This show used to be both funny and poignant. Now it's just silly.
During the show I was feeling bad for Jaime Pressly. She's so good, but these scripts lately are crap.

Being a new viewer this season, I've only really seen the stuff with him in Jail but I still find the show extremely entertaining. Maybe the earlier stuff was even better, but I'm still really enjoying these episodes.

How does a motorcycle sit on the roof of a trailer for several years without anyone noticing? Even after they supposedly covered it up so nobody would see it, the mirror was still clearly visible.
As with the rest of you, I'm already tired of the coma, but at least they're finding a way to do the list and show some flashbacks to the former life of crime. I did love drunk Earl's logic: "The cops will be looking for one guy in a big chicken costume, but they'll never think to look for two guys in half chicken costumes. Give me your pants."

In a way, this is getting back to the roots, because it's getting back to working on items from the list each week. I thought they left that behind too quickly and I hope this is their way of working back to it.
I agree though that the show-within-the-show thing is wearing thin on only the second week.

"The Hickeys" suck. The return of the motorcycle was good (and a good guest appearance by the guys from American Chopper). I'm hating Earl in a comma.

Between this episode and the last one Earl is on my "must get better" list if I'm gonna keep the season pass...

It's not so much a matter of people noticing, it's a matter of people caring. When I worked for a cable company years ago I went to several trailer parks. Some were nice, and some had things like tricycles, lawn furniture, and sofas on the roofs of trailers. Never underestimate the conditions some people will live in without a second thought.

People complaining about the motorcycle not being found have to remember that this is Camden County being talked about with a police force that has been shown a few times as not being particularly bright :p :D

Earl remains in a coma, while Randy and Joy continue crossing items off his list.

I liked the episode, anything with Randy in a prominent role is good by me.
Hell, Earl in a coma bringing Alyssa Milano a regular slot is also gravy.

There are people here who refuse to watch the preview for the next week's episode for fear of being spoiled. To them, your post would be a spoiler.

Spoilers are things that tell you what's going to happen in the show before it happens in the show. Very simple, consistent, and meaningful definition, but people always start nickel-and-diming it with exceptions and exclusions and getting themselves into a mess trying to make it more complicated to no good effect.

I wish that the show didn't have Jason Lee narrating the others' efforts in crossing off the list, I would have been more fitting that whoever was with Earl when wrong doing was done to recall the event.

Spoilers are things that tell you what's going to happen in the show before it happens in the show. Very simple, consistent, and meaningful definition:up::up::up: Seriously; is this REALLY that complicated? If it wasn't shown in the show itself (previews don't count as the show) it's a spoiler. If it's in the previews, it's a spoiler. If it's in an article, it's a spoiler. If it's in the TV guide description or the TiVo description, it's still a spoiler (you do realize you can press the Play button from the Now Playing screen and jump right into the show without reading the description?) Personally I always watch the previews so these kinds of things don't bother me, but I have had shows spoiled in other ways and it can be a drag.
There's a lot of scoffing at "spoiler police" here, but I come down on the other side: I can't figure out how such a simple rule can be so hard to understand and follow. Even if you don't care, isn't it common courtesy to respect the wishes of others (and the rules of the forum)?

not sure I understand the problem with Earl being in a coma...he's still up and about the whole ep, albeit in flashbacks and fantasy!

That had me laughing out loud. Actually, many other lines did too. I LOVED this episode. Yeah, the coma sitcom isn't great, but it was kept to a minimum. The other stuff was GREAT.

It always cracks me up how much time we spend discussing the spoiler rules in an attempt to prevent someone from flying off the handle because they read a spoiler, yet I'd bet that well over 80% of those participating in these discussions watch the previews and don't mind a mild plot spoiler such as an episode description. Notice how nobody in this thread has actually complained about being bothered by the spoiler? It's only been people protecting those who MAY POSSIBLY be bothered.
Anyway, I agree with the spoiler rules. I just find it funny, that's all.

By the way, has anyone else noticed that the house in "The Hickeys" is laid out exactly the same as that in "The Dick Van Dyke Show"? I keep waiting for Earl to trip over the ottoman.

And Billie's hair is exactly like Mary Tyler Moores, and the pregnancy episode reminded me a lot of the baby episodes on Dick Van Dyke.
I vote for getting rid of the coma ASAP. I found myself complaining about the jail time and now this. Earl was better when it was straightforward about crossing things off the list. What IS it about NBC writers - that they have to ruin solid formats like Scrubs and Earl with all this "creative" crap?
Oh yeah, I've failed to see a single preview on Earl since they returned. NBC always has that fake "more Earl [as in more Scrubs] coming right up" and then they go right into their next show instead. Really pisses us off!

Actually, if you want to see exactly which house it is watch a rerun or two of "Still Standing". It's that set, just dressed to look more retro.

I wasn't talking about the bike not being found by the cops. I'm thinking that if there are a bunch of white-trash folks barely scraping by in this trailer park and there's a motorcycle likely worth at least $5k in plain sight up on the roof of the deaf guy's trailer, wouldn't someone want to claim it?

Why would anyone think that the "pieces" of a motorcycle on the top of a trailer would be a nice, working motorcycle?

Yeah, it was annoying, especially since everything else in this show is so realistic. ;)

I loved the sequence of Randy trying to remember the night about the motorcycle while they were in the hospital.
"Somthing's coming back. No, it left. It's coming back. There it goes again, it's fast. Now it's just a naked lad... oh it's a dude. I don't wanna do this anymore."
I was afraid they'd let the here it is, no it's gone thing go on for too long, but I like the way it worked.
