View Full Version : HDD replacement problems

Would someone be so kind as to assist me please?

I have a Tivo with a 250Gb drive which all works fine.

My mother has a Tivo with a 40Gb drive which has started playing up (well it is an original drive so its not done too badly). I'm trying to replace her 40Gb drive with another 40Gb drive I have lying around unused (Maxtor 5400) which I'll take down next time I go.

I tried using Tigers mfstools to restore a tivo.bak I created from my drive in 2001 however hit problems with the restore due to a size issue so I went back to the original mfstools I downloaded in 2001 and tried using them with the 2001 instructions. The process seemed to go ok, however when I put the new40Gb drive into *my* Tivo not a lot happens. I don't even get the powering up msg or any LEDs on the front, however the HDD led is flashing - at first quite a bit, but now not so much - I haven't seen it flash for a while.

What's going on? Is this normal? I'm not sure if Tivo is upgrading the code from 1.5.1(?) to 2.5.2(?) and this is taking the time or if the restore just failed for some reason.
(Is the code stored internally somehow, is this possible, or should it just use the code on the HDD?)

Any guidance much appreciated.

Thanks,
Jeddy

For a 40gb drive I would suggest using the LBA48 Boot CD (http://www.tivoheaven.com/download/ptv-mfstools2-large-disk.iso) and a command line similar to the following:-

mfsrestore -zpi /mnt/dos/tivo.bak /dev/hdX

where hdX is your target drive.

Your problem with size could be due to a failure of your own backup to divorce, meaning that it is trying to create a large MFS partition on your small drive.

If there's nothing in either backup that you really need to transfer to the drive then you could also use Hooch or get an image from the image begging thread in this forum and use that.

I remember having a big panic when I did my upgrade and nothing happened. Needs to be jumpered to Master IIRC but your working Tivo drive should give you a clue.

Alas that mfsrestore cmd didn't work it gave me an error msg complaining about size so wouldn't do anything.

The jumpers are def correct (I also tried CS just in case).

I think what I didn't make clear is that the backup was of my original 40Gb drive in 2001, so it should be a straight restore if that makes any difference?

Doesn't your dear old mum deserve a nice 250GB drive as a present from her loving son?

Then you can follow the instructions at www.steveconrad.co.uk/tivo/upgrade3.html

If you have put the maxtor in your TiVo then it will now be locked to 10mb. You need to unlock it before you can configure it.

The bios is still showing it as 40Gb (40017mb I think) but I may try an unlock anyway just in case.

I would agree with the 250Gb however she has recording of Tivos suggestions turned off and only normally has a handful of recordings on it anyway - I doubt she uses 4Gb let alone 40 as it is...
It may be another option though.

Well I took your advice and got a copy of a 2.5.5 image from the begging thread and that has worked nicely.
It appears there is something in my original backup which prevented it from being restored to a same sized disk (I'm sure I used that backup to restore to my larger disk!)
Thanks guys...

Glad to hear things are sorted!
