I've recently been having problems w/ HDMI,the picture will turn pink or it will actually lock up my tv and i have to power of the tv or disconnect the HDMI connection. So I used a monoprice component splitter(i stream the other component to a projector) the premium one and when i flipped back and forth between the 2 pictures HDMI and component the component seems darker and less vibrant than the HDMI. Its a pain to reconnect everything to just straight component could anyone tell me if they've directly compared the two before and did you have the same problem or is it the splitter thats causing this loss of quality.

Well there are a lot of things going on there so its not exactly cut and dry. Your inputs aren't going to look the same anyways that's why all of the settings on your TV are per-input. However I will say this:

On my projector I had one of my Tivo's connected directly through HDMI and through a monoprice component switcher to see if there was any real loss on the switcher. I did not see any significant difference.

Then, when I hooked ALL my gear up, one of my HD Tivos was run through a monoprice splitter with a run going to my projector and another run to the switchbox ('cause HDMI is broken on that tivo) but my other HD Tivo was connected to the projector via HDMI with its component output going to the switchbox (unsplit). The switchbox feeds a TV downstairs. The result was that the Tivo that had been run through the splitter was noticably darker than the other. This wasn't entirely unexpected though since component video really wasn't meant to be split that way, I just adjusted the settings on my TV to compensate (I ripped some AVIA test patters from DVD and inserted them into the Tivo for callibration) and made a preset for each Tivo.

If you're just using a "component splitter" like a Y cable, the signal will degrade. If you use a true component distribution amplifier, the signal will be the same as straight run.

1) It sounds like you have a bad HDMI cable. Try replacing it.

2) Each input on your TV needs to be adjusted/calibrated separately. And, yes, different types of input will need different setup values.

This is a real long-shot but... I use a Pioneer Elite Receiver 84 tsx (or something like that, I'm dyslexic on the model #) which has a known bug related to passing component inputs out to HDMI outputs. I noticed it right away that component passed through to HDMI was much darker. There was a firmware fix that corrected it.

Are you using a receiver in the middle of the TiVo and TV?

Your TV might have different display settings for component vs. HDMI.
