View Full Version : Wireless adapter cause rebooting?

I bought one of the Woot.com special refurbished HDTivos and a new Tivo wireless adapter off of EBay. I am having rebooting issues constantly...sometimes three times in an hour show. I am beginning to suspect the wireless adapter as at least part of the cause...any history of others having the USB wireless adapter cause these random reboots?

Thanks

Why do you suspect the adapter?

It has rebooted a few times when I unplugged the adapter from the rear of the box. Also, I thought others had rebooting issues when Tivo updates were occuring, linking the problem to the adapter possibly. If not, I am at a loss?

That's an easy fix. Don't remove the adapter with the Tivo plugged in! Unplugging a USB adapter on a series 2 Tivo will cause it to reboot. Always shut the Tivo down before unplugging the adapter. It's not hot-swappable!

Ok, then back to my original post...it is also rebooting often on its own...sometimes as many as three times during an hour recording. If not the wireless adapter, any other thoughts?

It could just be a defective TiVo. The warranty should take care of that.

Assuming the previous poster is correct....... Is it possible the Cat 5 wire that connect your adapter to your tivo is loose or one of the connectors isn't snapped tight? I'd try another patch cable before assuming a defective tivo.

I will try a new cable, and verify that everything is tight.

Warranty=shipping it back to Tivo, right? And waiting.....?

You'd rather keep a broken tivo?

Tivo can and will ship out a replacement (and put a hold on your credit card) before you send in the defective machine.

The OP is trying to make sure the problem is with the tivo, and not with the wireless adapter, before he contacts tivo.

OP--I suggest your remove the wireless adapter, tivo can go a couple of days without a phone call, and see if your unit reboots. If the reboots stop chances are the problem is with your adapter or cable if not contact tivo.

Good for you, you've stated an obvious fact that was never in question.

Here's your card.

I've frequently unplugged and replugged a USB wireless adapter from our Series 2 TiVos without any problem. It often fixes a recognition error--and there's no rebooting!

OTOH, with the latest OS (9.2?), often when the wireless router in the house goes OFF, the TiVo reboots! It's like clockwork! And quite irritating!

Thanks again, all. I tried unplugging the adapter for a while to see...the HD still rebooted...and now sometimes freezes altogether. Sounds like a call to Tivo to replace. What a drag...I should have known that the Woot deal was too good to be true.

I'm guessing he was being kind in response to your smart-ass remark in post 9.

Exactly, a few posters are quick with smart-ass remarks but not so quick to provide accurate, helpful information.

Might as well figure out what's defective before you start RMAing stuff.

One other question...when I get the replacement TivoHD, do I need to have the cable company come out again to move the cablecard to the new box? Or can I simply pull it out of box 1 and plug it into box 2?

Depends on the cable company. For sure, remember to yank the CableCard out of the box before you return it (duh).

The card will most likely need to be "paired" with the new box. If this becomes necessary, I would try calling the cable co. and try to do it over the phone. You'll need to get information from the card diagnostics screen so they can properly authorize the card.

Some companies will insist on a truck roll to have a tech do the "install" - some will not.

You might schedule an appointment to preclude a far-out install date and cancel it if it turns out you don't need to pair the card or are able to get it authorized yourself.

Best of luck - sorry to hear about the bum box.

I have actually used the same pair of CC's in 3 S3 tivos as long as the cable company has the card numbers in the system and as long as you put them back in the same slots you shouldnt have to call anyone. At least not in my case...

Update: new box received...swapped the CC myself and no issues to date. Thanks for the input.
