What's up - I am swapping from one Tivo HD to another - long story. . . I have NYC TWC (staten island cable) - is there any way to do the swap myself - or will I have to have a truck roll?

I dont care either way - I'd just want to get it done quicker.

Well I just had my series 3 dual tuner HD Tivo set up by Comcast last week. They refused to give me a cable card & sent a tech out to install it. The model and MAC address of the Tivo box as well as the M Card MAC address are recorded prior to activation (sending a hit) by Comcast.
Your best bet is to call your cable company.

I dont care either way - I'd just want to get it done quicker.in mid july and early august last year i purchased and began using my two TiVo HD's. the initial cablecard activation of these two units was done by two different tw techs (time warner wouldn't allow me to do it myself) and both were uneventful. but i got two motorola s-type cards for each unit rather than the requested m-types. since my bill was going to change significantly for each of these changes i never looked real closely at the bills so i' not sure if i was charged for the two install trips or not.

anyway, 8 months went by and then i started having some pixelization problems (never had any before) not related to cablecards with one of them and after reporting the symptoms to TiVo they immediately swapped it out. this was earlier this month. as before, time warner southern california, would not allow me to install the two motorola cards i'd just removed from the problematic unit into the replacement unit but instead insisted that they schedule a technician to come out to do it.

so i said, well, if you're coming out anyway, bring two m-cards to replace both the two s-cards in the replacement unit, and the 2 s-cards in my other TiVo HD as well. they agreed.

two techs showed up and tried for over two hours to register/activate a new motorola m-card in ithe replacement unit. they claimed this was the way of things with all m-cards they had tried to install since m-cards became available to them. so i said how about just putting the two old s-cards in it and when they did this the replacement unit was up and running in about 5 minutes.

i just received this month's bill and it included a $19.95 trip charge. i called tw and asked what this was for and was asked if on march 17th a technician had come out to my home. i said yes, but that it was because tw wouldn't allow me to swap the two s-card into the replacement unit myself. i was then immediately told that, as a courtesy, the charge would be removed from my bill.

Is there a way to tell the difference between an M card and a S card? I'd like to know which one I have.

Also, AFAIK, you cannot take a card out of TiVo box a and put it into TiVo box 2. It won't work because the card is assigned to be used only in that particular slot on that particular TiVo box.

If it's a Scientific Atlanta card, if I remember correctly the S-cards had a blue label while the M-cards had a green one. Don't know about the Moto's.

It depends on your cable provider. Some will pair the card to the box so it can't be used with another box. Others do not pair the card and you can freely swap them.

FWIW, Comcast was just here setting up an m-card in my new tivoHD and he said that if I were to remove the card and put it back in, that the pairing number would change and cause the card to become inactive. I would then have to call and report the new number (though from how previous users have made it sound, they would probably make me wait to have a technician come out and call it in for me)

:) MatstarsI just had Weaknees replace my corrupted original hard drive with a fresh new larger hard drive and when i got it back i re-inserted my CableCARDs and was unable to get my digital or HD channels. I re-ran guided setup but still couldn't tune my digital or HD channels so i simply called TWC and asked the CSR to hit my cards and he cheerfully got them both working literally within two minutes. He never asked me for any numbers or any information.

So you might want to just stick em in and call TWC and ask them to hit your cards, and if they can't or won't do it then ask for a truck roll.......

I had a problem with my tivo and cable card a few weeks ago, so I removed the card, restarted the tivo, when it came back up it said no cable card detected do I want to rerun guided setup so I chose run later, reinserted my card and all my channels came back without having to get the card hit again, I have 1 moto M card and Charter communications cable.

Try to get to the local Level 3 Support & request they update your "Host ID" to the correct one for the new Tivo HD (after moving the card to your new box). I had the exact same situation, Time Warner New England... They tried to charge me a service call; Ended up resolving by (basically demanding) escalation to local Level 3 support (and resolved within a couple minutes of getting to Level 3 support).
