Program not Recorded

An item on my Recording History list "was not recorded because there was not enough space." However, I have many old programs Tivo could have dumped, only 1 or 2 "Save until I delete" programs, and I have a Tivo Suggestion program recorded now.

I expected Tivo would delete old programs to make room for this new recording. How can I avoid this in the future?

Are there enough old programs with a black exclamation point in a yellow circle to permit recording the show at the quality setting for that program? You're correct that the TiVo is supposed to delete old shows, but there's also a setting for the minimum time before a program is eligible to be deleted, even when it's not KUID.

In general I try to keep the Deleted Items folder from getting completely empty so I know free space will be taken from there instead of from a suggestion or other show that I haven't yet watched.

A recording that says "This recording will be kept until at least Tues 4/1 at 8:00 pm" can and will be deleted for another recording before then if it's the oldest recording not set to KUID. The recording history will show that it was deleted earlier than expected to make room for another recording.
