Hi, my upgraded Philips Series 1 (original 20gb hard disk upgraded to 120gb) was serving me fine for the last 4-5 years but last week for some reason I noticed the unit's time had drifted (about 25-30 minutes off).
So not thinking right, I ran the guided setup and now after going through the Zip code (92804) and area code 714, it dials out but after 3-4 minutes comes back with an error which says something like could not connect.
Through another phone, I can hear the modem transmission noise, so it is def. dialing out but fails for some reason.
I do not care about the Guide as I only use Ch 3 and use TIVO purely as a DVR.
I tried rebooting, un-plugging, etc, but TIVO comes back to the same Guided setup screen after reboot.
Q. I see that there is no backdoor entry to exit out of setup or is there ?
If not, can I take the hard disk out and format it and restore it with the original TIVO backup (with the setup run).
I mean, the Guided setup thing I hope is not stored in a BIOS or some-other flash ram.
Thank you

I had a similar experience this week. In my case, I recently had FiOS service installed and the Series 1 modem doesn't work over the digital phoneline. Assuming you haven't change your phone service, you may have a bad modem; you can buy a replacement for about $60.

Thanks, But i do hear the static so does it not mean that the modem seems to be ok. I could arrange an external modem, is it easy to bypass TIVO's internal modem ?
Also, could it be that I have DSL (on my phone line) and I plugged my TIVO into the DSL phone line adapter/splitter.
Also if somebody can please comment on my hard-disk restore question !?
Thanks

By all means, if you have a backup go ahead and restore it.

With DSL, the TiVo's phone line needs to be plugged into a DSL filter.

Thanks, it has been a while since I upgraded the hard disk. Can somebody point me to the guide for series 1..., I tried to search but could not find one.

Ok, I refer it as a splitter, so I guess I have correctly plugged the TIVO into the phone socket of the DSL filter.

It's been a while for me too - I've always found Hinsdale's guide pretty straight-forward, even for non-technical folks.

When you get your TiVo working you only need to make a daily call whenerver the clocks drifts, not re-run guided setup. Of course to do so you will still need a working modem so you may want to look into setting up an external modem, PPP, or even a TurboNet card.

Thank you folks. That did it, actually just one command did it as I had the original bak on a Fat32 partition of my computer hard drive already.
#mfsrestore -s 127 -xzpi /mnt/dos/tivo.bak /dev/hdc (restore/expand to single new larger A drive)
But I did loose all my recorded programs though, but I guess, it is alright. Life was hell w/o Tivo :)
BTW, the clock is still a drift. I am on PST, but the TIVO's was originally from EST. I was fine with subtracting 3 hours but the problem is the clock is some 3hrs:40min ahead. And that might be a real pain to set up manual TIVO recordings. Any suggestions if I can change the time in the original TIVO backup on the linux prompt before I restore it to the new drive or even after restore, does not matter.
Thanks again.

Repeat guided setup to set the time.
You will probably have to set a known local dial-in as the dialing prefix, or use serial PPP.
It isn't that hard to use an external modem, if you can get one of the easier to set up ones.

I know this is an old thread...
But I can't seem to find the way to use an external modem on my series 1. Weaknees said it has to be programmed? I didn't know a modem can be programmed..Can anyone help me?? Thanks in advance..:)

If you purchased it from Weaknees, most likely they'll be able to help you get it working.
I'm also a little confused about why you'd post this in a thread about a Series 1 thread about a different topic.
It at least comes close to being a case of "thread hijacking".
Would probably have been better to start your own thread.
Nobody's going to know what you really need from the title of this thread.
