Update on the next release

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Hello everyone - I want to let you know that the next software release for the Comcast DVR with TiVo Service is now targeted to begin rolling out next week, beginning with the towns surrounding our Derry NH cable system, and will be rolling out to the other systems where Comcast DVR with TiVo service is available over the following few weeks. This is a bit later than the originally-planned March rollout to align with other Comcast programs.

To recap, this software release will include a firmware fix for the reboot loop bug on DCH boxes (aka the "8888" display bug), enable Dolby Digital output for DCH boxes, correct the Guide HD filter behavior, and include other bug fixes.

On a separate note, there were some operational problems last week that resulted in some boxes losing Guide data, and some boxes losing IP connectivity and getting stuck at the db01 phase of startup. Comcast is investigating these issues to try to minimize their occurrence in the future.

Thanks again to the early users for their feedback and support, as Comcast and TiVo work to improve the product.

Too bad, just yesterday I returned my crazy 8's box. I would have needed a new box and new firmware to permanently fix that bug anyway. I'll buy back in as soon as the new software and firmware hits the SouthCoast MA, New Bedford area.

When I hear good things, I'll order the Comcast TiVo service again to play with. The only good thing about it was the free ONDemand movies, but I can see where that could get old. In the meantime my trusty TiVo HD's are kicking it. I hope to be set up soon with M Cards to replace the S Cards I held over from the original Series3 I had.

I'm now being charged $5.00 per digital outlet rather than $2.75 per CableCard. Exhorbitant with S Cards. Anyone else see this increase? Comcast was counting my Comcast TiVo as my first free digital outlet and then each CableCard was another digital outlet at $5.00 each. Now that I have returned the Comcast TiVo box and will soon have M Cards, I think I'll be back to somewhere near the original cost of CableCards.

I'm in your relative neighborhood, mtchamp, so I'm probably going to wait until you give it a thumbs up before trying it again. It's the "over the following few weeks" part that I've got raised eyebrows over.

Hi Calmante, I'm in Acushnet. It has been about a month since the 8888's struck my box. I've been waiting for the fix promised mid-March. We are doing remodeling and often turning circuits off for electrical. The Moto box doesn't like a power failure. It fails to reboot properly and gets into that 8888 display loop. Unlike many others, I have the real TiVo's, so these problems with Comcast TiVo were not of freakout proportions. I thought the Comcast TiVo worked very well and felt like I had a real TiVo. I was just tired of paying for something that stopped working and missed the mid-March fix as promised.

After reviewing my last bill, enough was enough, I unplugged it and took it up to Mt Pleasant St. There was a happy part to this visit. Going through the front door, you are greeted with a giant TiVo guy logo in your face. Inside the office, the first poster on the wall among stuff like Showtime is the TiVo baseball guy with antennae on a large poster. The service windows have small TiVo decals like I have received in the past.

After seeing all that TiVo signage, I really felt Comcast was serious, but without a known fix for the 8888's, there was no reason to hold on and keep paying. Now that it looks like Comcast and TiVo have fixed it, we could be back with Comcast TiVo pretty soon. I would love nothing more for my beloved TiVo to work properly on a Comcast Moto box. It will be a great day when Comcast just makes new TiVo specific boxes available such as the new Tru2Way Series4 TiVo boxes that will be designed to be plug and play boxes for all Cable Systems across the country with 2 way interactive features delivered by the local cable company like ONDemand with TiVo inside. Maybe we will get these by the end of the year.
