I suppose the answer could go eather way depending on certain factors... but can you stack TiVo's say two high since they have the rubber feet. I was thinking of using a AV switch box and just keep both TiVo's in my room and switch between them as needed. I'm just not sure if it's all that safe just because of the heat output they have all be it a minimal ammmount of heat.

8 as in right on top of eachother 8 high ? lol ... well hell if you can do that I'll be fine with two... I wana take my S3 put on bottom and take my S2 DT and put it on top... I figured if I wana save my shows as stated in the other thread and not sacrafice drive space on the S3 because of file enlarging during transfers I may as well just keep one of the units I was gonna sell.

I have just the same stack of 2 in my office area save that one serves up TiVo in Switzerland via slingbox for my Brother-in-law. So add a DVD player and slingbox to the heat mix, along with a small network hub.
Everything runs at normal temp.
and I just use the TV inputs to switch between them

I had 4 stacked on top of each other at one point for several years. Never had a problem other then when I eventually unstacked them the lower ones had permanent marks where the feet of the one on top of it where. Not dents, more like the rubber in the feet change the color of the paint slightly. Either that or the rest of the unit faded slightly and the rubber feet protected the part under them. Either way it wasn't a huge deal and was barely noticeable.

This pic is slightly outdated now, since I replaced the S2 with a THD and put the S3 on top of the THD:

I try to add a little additional space between components that I stack. I usually use small rectangular about 2" by 1" rubber pencil erasers underneath the feet of each component to add that little additional airspace.

I get component towel bars sections from The Home Depot, cut them to the right length, cap one end with caps from the hardward section, and place one on each side under the right and left feet.
Used water bottle caps will do the same thing. Black ones are less tacky than white ones.
The idea is to increase air space with this dunnage between the units.
Of course in the winter time I don't have to worry about over heating. There's usually a thin layer of frost just above the baseboard when the outside temperature gets colder than 40 below zero. My TiVo set up is against an outside wall.

Hey DeathRider, lil off topic but the post has already served its purpose and gone off topic so question for ya heh... is that EFC "Earth Final Conflict" on your TV... looks great in the picture color wise. BTW if that is what I think it is thats one heck of a show to bad they cancelled it.

I have had a 19" TV on top of a tivo for 4 years. Thus far, the only drawback is the unexposed portion of the tivo case accumulates dust.
I've run up to 3 tivos stacked, and as I recall, they maintained the same temperature as a single unit by itself (40C).

I was taking pics for avsforum (showing off the new TV). IIRC, it was ST:Enterprise, I was just pausing whatever was on HDNET at the time...
I happened to have purchased the Sony KDL-46W3000 from Sears on BF for $1400.
Since I paid so little, SonyStyle only charged me $150 for a 5 year warranty - I got it because it included lightning.
BTW, I really liked EFC too...
I had to get a new TV to better match the TiVo's output. I still only calibrated the TV by eye:D

A little story about heat. Had my computer case open. Both hard drives were running at 124 degrees. After I shut the computer down and closed the case, they now run at 102. Moral: moving air sucks heat away from components. Tivo has a fan. Stacking should be no problem. Just a guess on my part but makes sense to me.

I just have to say I really enjoy Smallville and Enterprise on HDnet in HD with no commercials. With a Tivo season pass it's far superior to any DVD box set (especially since its free) ;)

Does THD run a little hot(ter) as compared to S2? One of my S2s is at 40C but THD is at 48C. These are both sitting in main entertainment center. S2 sits in a more open space and THD is behind a glass door. I am wondering if I should pull THD out from where it sits and stack THD and S2.
Also, what is the normal temp range for Tivos? I see posts claiming 33C to 50C.

I haven't tried stacking Tivos but I use a USB laptop cooler under them for a little extra heat removal. I would think sandwiching coolers between them can't hurt when stacking! Well ok I guess if you have like 8 the plastic "could" crack the cooler at the bottom. :D
The coolers are like $9 on sale, so the cost is no biggie.
