I think TiVo should upgrade the networking chip to off load the transfer to a seporate controller chip and upgrade to Gigabit Ethernet.

Transfering so many shows, music, pics, back and forth is SOOO SLOWW!!!

It would be very nice if they did this in S4.

The network is not the bottleneck, the existing 100 megabit interface is at least 5 times faster than the bit rate of the recorded material. You may be able to get more efficient drivers, but the bulk of the problem is the re-packaging of the video stream for transfer.

Correct me if I am wrong, if the file is not being streamed and it's a linux based OS, then is it just a large file on the hard drive? What am I missing?? When I transfer files from two linux based pc's (Redhat) the transfer is very fast. Downloading a tv show or movie from iTunes is faster that TiVoToGo.

A dual tuner TiVo is almost always preforming 3 drive requests at any given time (2 writes and 1 read). If you change both tuners to a channel you don't receive then you may get better transfer speeds. Also when downloading from the TiVo it is preforming some type of file conversion and this is very slow compared to just a straight copy. Other people get 2-3x the speed using extraction methods we can't talk about here.

Then they should add an option which would stop buffering and use CPU for something useful (like transfer). Maybe when we hit Tivo button it should suspend buffering and not time out from menus (unless there is a scheduled recording).

Also, if there is a seperate chip for encoding/transfer that would help speed up the process.

BTW, where can we talk about the 'other extraction methods'? :)

Do a google search for "Deals, Freebies, and TiVo"

its not stored as a .avi or divx or mpeg on the disk, its stored as a proprietary format that needs to be converted for consumer use (which is why TTG is so much slower then MRV, which just sends the internal 'native' format)

You are wrong.

Apart from the operating system itself, there is no "file" system to speak of, at least that relates to Linux.

Content is held on the TiVo drives as database elements, which for video, are stored in the "Ty" fomat, which make it easy for the TiVo record and play back, but are muxed differently than a normal MPEG file. It has to be remuxed to make it a normal MPEG2 file, and for content security reasons TiVo has elected to do the processing upon the Tivo itself.

As for a remuxing processor and Gigiabit Ethernet, I don't think the majority of TiVo customers would really care enough to bother adding said featues, plus the slower connection makes it a bit less convenient for content pirates.

Tune both tuners to a channel you don't receive and transfer speeds should improve.

What you are saying is correct. That would need about 10 keystrokes. Call me lazy, I want to do that in one click (when I hit Tivo button).

Interesting... I'm going to try that on my S3.

the idea is tha ttuning to channels that have no signal will stop both buffers from recording since there is nothing to record.

Call me crazy but I would hate to loose my two live TV buffers just by hitting the TiVo button.

now a programmable remote that has a button that will switch the two tuners to blank tuners - that is my kind of geek lazy

Just put your tivo into standby. You can still transfer, it is just not recording. My TTG speeds jump up quite a bit when my HD is in standby vs. on.

THe live buffers are still recording while in standby mode, but maybe something else? I may have to go see if this is the case for me
