Discovery and TLC!

I woke up this morning to that wonderful message "Your lineup has changed"

I now get Discovery and TLC in HD! I can't understand why I am so excited...Charter in SE Wisconsin adds channels so slowly, but damn, two at once! Discovery was certainly #1 on my list, so next will be HGTV I hope!!

I would love to get those Discovery Network HD channels on Time Warner Mid-Ohio. Discovery HD, Science Channel HD, TLD HD and Animal Planet HD. We have had HD Theater for a while though. We just got A&E HD, NGCHD, HGTVHD and a sports channel in HD so it might be a while before we get those.

I re-did my season passes for all shows that I am currently watching on standard def for discovery and TLC to high def this morning...I think I am close to 70% of my season passes all in HD...Spike, and a small number of other sporadic channels I visit once in awhile still aren't HD...but I can't wait to see Mythbusters and Dirty Jobs in HD now!

I've had regular Discovery in HD (as opposed to HD Theater) and Animal Planet HD for a few months now, and with few exceptions they have been a major disappointment.

A few programs like Dirty Jobs and the more recent episodes of Animal Precinct look awesome. Most of the other programming like Mythbusters and Smash Lab look only marginally better than the original analog version.

Most of the programming is clearly 4:3 with the top and bottom cropped whenever any sort of graphic overlay is displayed like the credits.

Be sure to disable any old non-hd versions of those channels in the channels I receive, or you will be sorry. Wishlists and alot more will not be what you want to see.

I wish Comcast would add these channels in Philly. All I get is National Geographic in HD. Really it seems the only good HD channel on my TV is the Food Network. Every other HD channel pales in comparison to the clarity of this network's shows.

Good thing we don't have Comcast here in Bethlehem. We have 33 HD channels on our cable company.

I haven't disabled mine and I'm not sorry. For the reasons I've stated above, for much of the programming it's not worth the extra hard drive spice to record the HiDef version.

Not a frequent poster, but I'm with RonDawg on this. These HD additions for the most part seem to be stretch-o-vision. Discovery, TLC, TNT, AE, Animal Planet, this list goes on. Very little programming is in true HD on these channels.

Some look terrific, but some channels don't even take the time to crop them; they just stretch the picture. Tanya Meme looks, um, even bigger on HGTV HD! :D

For the most part, Discovery avoids the "stretch-o-vision" that A&E and I believe TNT do with their high definition versions. They do crop the top and bottom of much of their programming though, which makes no sense when you can see in the 480i version that they are already letterboxed (especially BBC-sourced programming). Why not just show the unletterboxed original?

Even though I love watching the History Channel, I am NOT looking forward to its HD version after viewing what A&E in HD look like (unnaturally stretched).

They did the same thing here. It was called "Discovery HD Theater" they then changed the name to just "HD Theater". Now there is a "Discovery Channel HD" which is different from "HD Theater".

I'm not trying to defend them but HD content is more expensive to produce. For example I remember reading that the cheesy sets for talk shows that looked great in SD didn't cut in in HD. Money had to be spent on more lavish sets. I would think/hope that more and more true HD content will be produced as time goes on.
