I want to buy an HD TiVo and I currently have an older series 1 TiVo unit and the month to month plan. If I buy the new one, will I be able to use it on my existing plan without any costs?

Is there anyway for me to take advantage of any specials for new subscribers? Doesn't seem all that fair that existing customers don't get some of the special rates that new customers get....

Any paid plan be it yearly or month to month can be swapped between TiVos... The only cost increase youd have is if you wanted to keep the month to month on the S1 but also be able to use the HD unit in which case you'd need a new plan for that unit but you could get it at a discounted rate.

But you've got to buy at retail (or from somewhere other than TiVo.com) if you want to replace the existing TiVo on your account and retain your current rate. Simply login to tivo.com/mma (http://www.tivo.com/mma) and click "change service number."

You can buy a TiVo HD and transfer you existing account to the new Tivo and your old Tivo will be unsubscribed at the same time.

I've been paying attention to subscription rates and hardware prices for a number of years and have never seen a deal that was for new subscribers only. Maybe you are confusing new subscriptions and new subscribers which are two very different things.

Most "specials" are in the form of rebates, and as such you have to choose between the rebate for new service, or no rebate and carry your existing plan onto the new box.

It should be noted that the boxes sold at tivo.com are only for new activations.

FWIW, it is standard practice amongst most sorts of providers to either not offer deals on hardware/service for new hardware for existing providers, or require a new/further commitment to activate discounted hardware.

and since your series 1 is most likely 12.95 a month then either switch the TSN at no cost and continue to pay 12.95 or else do one of the prepay option that is less than 12.95 a month.

also since you have a TiVo already and an account you could keep the series 1 subbed and buy lifetime on the Tivo HD for 399$. A couple of months later you can decide to drop the sub on the series 1 or not but the lifetime will remain valid on the TiVo HD once you have it.
