I durrently have a Tivo 2 hooked up to a combo DVD/vcr recorder. When I want to burn from my tivo hard drive to a DVD disk, I can only do it in real time. In other words is my movie is 2 hrs long, it takes me two hours to burn it to the disk. I have read that some of the combined units like the Humax or the Pioneer elite 57H can record disks at 4X. (an hour segment in 15 minutes)

Is this only possible with the combined units (DVR with DVD recorder) or are you able to find an external DVD recorder that can record in that faster speed from your tivo hard drive?

The combos can burn faster since they essentially copy the video data from the HDD to the DVD drive/disc.

Since an external recorder can only record the full A/V signal, it must do it in real time.

If your want to burn your TiVo recordings at faster than real-time, the best way to do it without buying a combo TiVo/DVD recorder unit is to network your TiVo to your computer, where you can burn the program directly to DVD.

Of course depending on your network and your computer, this may not be any faster than using a DVD recorder, though you will have better editing control.

Also, be aware that there's no editing on the DVD TiVos. What you recorded is what you have to burn to the disc.

If you started recording a minute early and ran a minute late to make sure you got all of the program or movie, the recording may be too long to fit on the disc. (Unless you used a lower quality setting.)
