I have an old Directv R10 (powered by Tivo) that I have not used in some time. Is it possible to pull the hard drive out of it, and add it to the series 2 DT that I have?
If that can be done, it would double my recording capacity without the expense of buying a new hard drive.
If it can be done, how would I go about it?
Thanks in advance.
Yes, virtually any (pata)drive can be used.
However, the drives will need to be connected to a pc to be married using programs such as winmfs, Instant Cake, etc.
You will also probably need some way to mount the add on drive in the Tivo. Probably best to buy a bracket from weaknees.com(for sure), dvrupgrade.com(not so sure) among others. Weaknees only sells the bracket included with an entire dual drive kit. Read about it as such is probably the best way to run a Tivo in a dual drive set up. I'm not saying you need to buy the kit there, ad parts can be accumulated piece meal, but a similar set up may help insure a longer and more stable life for the Tivo.
I know you said that since you have the spare drive laying around this is how you want to proceed and it can easily be done.
When all is said and done, it may be best in the long run to just look(wait) for a sale on a very large capacity single drive and use the software programs to prepare(copy shows) and use in a single drive upgrade.
You can learn all you need to know about the preparing the drives at mfslive.org. There are also forums there for help.

Possible, yes, recommended, not if you are talking of original capacity drives.
If it were me, I'd get one new large drive, and a USB-IDE cable or cases and use the "original" drives with that, as additional computer storage, possibly to archive TiVo recordings.
