Hi,

I signed up as a paying user for One True Media account. I'm in California and my parents are in North Carolina, and it's kind of a chore for them to see pictures and videos I have taken of kids and family out here. The OTM offer really appealed to me, so I got them a TiVo for Christmas, and set up the OTM account.

I'll have to say that it actually works pretty well! I have taken pictures and video, uploaded to OTM, did a few titles, etc. with their editing tools, and then published it to my TiVo channel for Mom and Dad to see. They get it the next day, and are just ecstatic! I think they're still a little unsure how it really works....

Anyway, my comments:

1. The picture quality of what comes from OTM back to a TiVo is WAAAAAY inferior to what I sent to OTM. I asked OTM about that, and this is what they had to say:

Greetings,

Your montage is rendered differently for the various outputs – the rendering for Tivo is compressed, but it is full resolution. We are limited at this time to this high compression in our agreement with Tivo. For the highest quality, we use very low compression for the creation of the DVD copies of your montage – the best way to watch your projects on your television.

I will forward you concerns to our engineers. Thank you for using One True Media.

So....TiVo, how about allowing OTM to use less compression for a better picture? I'm shooting DV video in 16:9 format, and I know how good it can look on a 65" HDTV.

2. I upload video in 16:9 mode (use Pinnacle Studio 10 to make an MPEG-2 file). It comes down to the TiVo as 4:3 anamorphic, so I use the aspect controls on TV or TiVo HD to expand. That's OK. BUT....OTM doesn't have online viewers with aspect ratio correction, so if you view the same video online, it's 4:3 squished. I wish that OTM would provide an online viewer with aspect ratio correction. What I have to do us use Pinnacle to make a 4:3 project with letterboxing; then it can be viewed online, and also use "zoom" mode on TV or TiVoHD to eliminate letterboxing. Can be done...but I'd rather the other solution works.

3. The OTM web site is VERY confusing! I'm always having to poke around and figure out (again) how do to things. It's just plain confusing!

Anybody else out there using OTM? Experiences? Comments on my problems? Ways to fix?

Cheers,
Bob

Bob,

I've been fooling around with the OTM stuff now that I've dropped DIRECTV and moved over to a Series3. Its a great platform and very easy to use, initially. But you are right, the site is confusing, especially as you drill down and start trying to tweak things beyond just fooling around. Even the concept of 'shares' and exactly how many you get and what is defined as a 'share' is somewhat confusing.

I would prefer to see a 'power user' option that gave you an unlimited number of shares and/or a higher bandwidth / higher resolution option for your personal channels...
