View Full Version : If I "upgrade" to 5lnb, can I still use old TiVo?

I think I've decided to take the plunge and "upgrade" to the 5LNB/HR21 dish/receiver. :( I'll lose my OTA, and thus will lose The CW (it's not available in the Twin Cities in HD via DirecTV), but the random reboots of the HR10-250 (most at the 48 minute mark...) are getting annoying and I'm assuming that Sunday Ticket will be broadcast only in MPEG-4... :(

That said, I don't think I'll be able to get all three of my DirecTiVos upgraded -- is that going to be a problem? I realize I won't get MPEG-4 channels from the 5LNB dish, but is there anything I need to do to continue receiving SD programming on any of them? (I have a series 1, series 2, and an extra HR10-250).

Thanks, all!

Thanks!

I had the same problem. They kept making me great deals on one HR20, but crap whenI wanted more than one. Apparently they will (or did) make deals on the first HR20 to hook you with the 2 year commitment. Not so many deals after you are hooked.

They are releasing an add-on box for the 21 series receivers that will accept OTA feeds. It is slim, connects via USB, and fits nicely on top of the 21. I have heard about a couple people pre-ordering for $99. Ask over at DBSTALK, they will have more specific info.

$99?

Unless they changed it, the official price was announce as $59!

The $99 is quoted by a reseller who does not know what the actual price will be. Indeed, the price was announced as $59 by DirecTV.

Yeah, I know about that, but it won't help me. :( The reason I'll lose OTA is because I only have 4 cables going from my roof into the basement. I have the antenna diplexed with one of the four cables, and that won't work anymore. Doing another RG6 run will be very difficult and not really worth the drywall repair to snake it thorugh. :(

I suppose I COULD try to run another coax through the attic into one of the bedrooms and connect to the cableTV homerun instead.... I'll have to think about that.

Hopefully they give me two HR21 receivers though -- I've seen other people post that they have, so we'll have to see.

Is there any difference between the AT9 and the AU9? Is one "better" than the other, especially in regards to rain-fade? Or don't I even get a choice?

From my understanding, they are the same. I have the old AT9 and have had zero issues.

I don't think you get a choice - the AU9 is what they install now. It's fine.

You can get around the four cable problem with an SWM-8 and keep one cable for OTA. This is what I did.

The AM21 got its "first look" published today at dbstalk.com. I've been a beta tester and it's a fine product. Better OTA tuner than the HR10.

You just haven't repaired enough drywall. Nothing could be easier or faster than drywall repair.

You must not live in Southern California where all of the walls are "textured". Trying to match the texture prior to painting is the hardest part of a drywall repair here.

That would be true... Care to come over and show me how to do it? :)

I'll have to look into that - I didn't realize that SWM was primetime yet. I'll see if that fits into my install at all.
