noticed this on the forum today:

"noticed my TiVos now have version 6.3f ready to install. Two versions show up in my MFS:
6.3f-01-2-101 tyDb 3395068 12/08/07 03:11 780
6.3f-01-2-121 tyDb 3395073 12/08/07 03:11 780"

Question is, how do I get this version?
How do I now it has been downloaded? Where will it show up?
What features does this version bring to my HR10-250?

Could someone please, please reply to this newbie?

Steve

Plug your phone line in.

If your system has downloaded it, and your system has been authorized to install it...

Your system will install it after it makes it's system phone calls.

Of course, if you follow Earl's advice, you'll lose the hacks including those allowing you to see what is in MFS. If you go read the deal database dot com forum, you'll find instructions on how to manually install 6.3f.

If you're a "newbie", how did you hack the system?

I think the "hacked" information, was a cut and paste from another post... if I read it correctly.

That's right, it was a cut and paste. I don't have a clue as to how to hack, and the why of doing it. I would be grateful if you would enlighten me...

You will need to spend just a couple minutes in this thread:

with all the problems with 6.3f ive been reading i unplugged my phone and will deny any updates. from everything i can gather there is something to do with the hardware.

i saw several threads where the posters even had brand new hard drives and the other was within 5 months as an upgrade.

something is causing the freeze and reboots and its likely the software combined with the unit.

Not sure what you're basing this conclusion on. Actually the incidences of "random reboots" are much less with 6.3f. Remaining reboot issues are most likely caused by hard drive or other hardware issues.

naw, ive been all over the place with posts and also direct experience with a friends unit that did have a brand new drive. same problems. and lots of posts will start coming i believe. dont forget a lot less people have these units and/or are not focused on it as much as before.

there is defintely something wrong with the 'f' release and it will take time to figure out how it connects and effects. yes standard hard drive, power supply, unknown etc.

Getting F'd is better than any other 6.3 release they've had, IMHO.

Amazing I know, but I still have 3.5 (no letter) on one of my units and I have exactly ZERO problems. I dont have folders but I also have no problems which makes it a great primary DVR and a nice fail-safe for my HR20.

I watch a lot of CBSHD on 2 HR10-250s with 6.3f and have never seen a single problem on either one.

Good for you, but I don't see anything amazing about that.

Tivo software was rock-solid for 8 years until the 6.x flurry of flop-sweat revisions. Each of those has been a disgrace, and it's beginning to sound like "f" is no better. That is why two of mine have never been allowed to up rev. It's an easy decision: no folders and minor sluggishness vs. audio dropouts and a significant increase in spontaneous reboots (the DST issue doesn't affect my location).

My best guess is that something in the 6.x overhaul is fundamentally flawed, and no one has a clue yet exactly what that is so that they can fix it. Can you say "Windows: Millenium Edition"?

The machines have won.

I agree version 6.3, 6.3a and 6.3b were bad releases of the software. I restored both of my HR10-250s back to version 3 during that time. 6.3c was reported to be fairly stable, but I didn't plug my phone lines back in until 6.3d had been out a couple of months.
Since then, I have had zero problems with 6.3d, 6.3e or 6.3f. I record a lot of HDTV mostly OTA including CBS and have never had either unit show any problems.
