View Full Version : HR10 1TB Drive ?'s

At my local Sam's club, they now have the 1TB WD my book world edition available. Anyone know whether the drive in it is parallel or serial? Looking to upgrade my HR10. My 750gig just isn't enough.

Or..is there another alternative to go to?

That drive is in an external enclosure, right? So you want to know if you can remove that drive and put it into the HR10. I didn't find whether it is PATA or SATA. But you could probably find a better price for a separate 1TB PATA drive for the HR10.

Just how much do you have on the 750GB drive? I would bet that the 1TB drive wouldn't be enough for you either. :)

Isn't bigger going to be better (all else held equal)?

Of course not every HDD is optimized for streaming multi-media content. Faster burst throughput is not helpful when sustained throughput is what's important, for instance. The Fry's bargain bin is not typically the best place to find reliable PVR drives.

I would find out what drives the 3rd-party guys like Weaknees and PTV use, and buy one of those, either from them or not from them.

I'm pretty sure there isn't such a thing as a 1TB pata drive.

1 TB drives only come in the sata variety.

Yea Jim, I was looking to remove the drive from the book and use it. If it is a sata, is there a conversion cable that would work and if so what do those run?

It took quite a while to build up the 750 before getting the 'not enough space' nag (A.I. season for the Mrs.), but the 1 TB will definitely take care of our needs.

I have an image from our sponsors here, which I will apply to the new drive. It will save me a couple bucks, while still acknowledging them.

I doubt it, as there probably wouldn't be enough room in the HR10 for the converter.

And codespy, what do you plan to do with the 750?
What the price for that WD book?

I will throw it in another HR10 I got which currently has a 250gig in it. It's actually a Seagate drive, and has performed perfectly.

The WD book was around $240+tax at my Sam's Club. They even have WD 750's there now too. They used to only carry 320's.

I may have to refresh my post in other places looking for success stories on 1TB drives in an HR10.

My results were not good. The WD Green drives seem to be a problem with the IDE/Sata bridge, or at least with the Rosewill one.

Heat and power consistency issues, the units appear to die faster. The units were originally designed for 1 drive. Although, there are users with multiple drives.

The #1 killer of all electrical components is heat.

I'm pretty sure all the newer Mybook drives are Sata. I pulled a 1 TB Sata drive from a Mybook and have tried using it.

My results were not good. The WD Green drives seem to be a problem with the IDE/Sata bridge, or at least with the Rosewill one.

I've been running my HR10-250 for years with dual drives. Power supply did go bad a month ago, but from what I've read that's pretty common with the original units. I had a bad cap but it was in the copper heatsink cage and hard to get to or I would have just replace it rather than the supply.

But then that is exactly why Weaknees sells a fan + bracket along with secondary drives for an extra $9.

My units with the stock 250 G + new 400 G + fan/bracket now run at about 15 degrees Centigrade cooler than they did with just the 250 alone, which is quite significant in the world of electronic devices. Have you ever seen how many issues can develop in a cable headend or broadcast technical operations center if the AC goes out and ambient temps rise 15 degrees C? The characterization "nightmare" would be a mild one.

Even if you don't add a second drive, the fan bracket alone (which can be purchased without a drive) is great cheap insurance for both drive and power supply, especially in a world where many of us are desperately trying to nurse our HR10's to the end of the Tivo agreement and beyond.
