A buddy of mine in Nashville TN just got a HDTV. Hearing me talk about TiVo so much he requested one with TiVo. The guy says yes, he has one in the truck.

So he does the install and leaves. My friend calls and says he doesn't see anything TiVo about it. I find out he has a Moto 3416 I and I believe it has 16.02 software. It has guide data that last for about 2 days and that's it. No TiVo search features. It sounds like a real piece of crap.

The installer said it would be 49.00 more a month for the "TiVo" and when my friend balked he said ok, he can have it for 9.95 for 6 months.

Now I went through his set up with him and I know absolutely nothing about moto boxes but I do know that he set him up so he appears to be on pass thru.

So what's the story? Does the box get a download from the cable company? If so how long does that take? Or did he just not give him the correct box?

I told him to call the cable company and complain but he had to fly to L.A. And what is this "8 hours" of HD recording"? 120gb hard drive? Is this real?

Ok. But what about the software? Where is it? Is it suppose to be downloaded? I would imagine that's how it would work but he's had the thing for a few days now and no update.

I don't think it's avalable in that area yet. Comcast has launched it in a few areas. I don't have comcast, but cox who just started testing it in the new england area just like comcast,

I don't think it's available in Tennessee at this time.
The price of $49 or even $9.95 is way out of line. My understanding is that Comcast will only charge an extra $2-3 a month for the TiVo service.
At this point I'm not sure if the service is downloaded or a new box would have to be installed.
It's not available in NJ either so I don't have it.

Just a thought but maybe the installer just calls the DVR "Tivo"? Just like any photo editing software is "Photoshop", etc.
