Have a Tivo HD that is connected to my Samsung TV via HDMI and optical to a Yamaha receiver.

When I first connected it all several weeks ago, I had the volume set on my Yamaha at -40 and never higher than -30. And I am hard of hearing ( at at least my wife says so.)

Over the last few weeks I have had to increase the volume on my Yamaha as high as -15. And no my hearing has not gotten worse. :)

Have done a full factory reset on the Yamaha and rebooted the Tivo. No change. Even reseated the optical cables.

I did notice that the volume on the analog channels was louder than on HD.

I called Comcast (that is another story in itself) and even had a technician come out. Signals on the cable were strong and since the CC were in a Tivo, they would do nothing to support it.

I have seen a lot of postings about sound drop outs , which I occasionally get, and I even get the sporadic Tivo reboot for no reason which I also get.

But nothing about volume issues.

Suggestions welcome.

It's been my observation that digital audio generally has a lower volume than analog. I believe this has something to do with the ability to "overdrive" analog equipment without significant distortion, which allowed the standard audio level to be pretty high in the past. When digital audio came around, levels that are too high "clip" to nothingness or worse, so the standard audio level producers use is lower.

I haven't noticed a decrease over time; on my receiver I just set it to volume 45 for analog and 55 for digital

I have also noticed a difference between channels but I think it is just more noticable now with a clean signal.

I wish there was a federal standard for volume, especially for commercials.

Same here. I keep my TV volume in the 18-23 range when watching analog channels through the S3, but I need to crank it up to around 40 on the digital ones.
