Because it might be good? Do you go to movies only if you know there will be sequels?

It wasn't too bad. The voice overs were getting annoying and there were alot of continuity things. I think the concept of the show is interesting.
I'm curious to see how many other idol watchers watched it. I'm not sure it'll make it after the move to Monday unless they've done alot of tweaking in the next episodes.

No, it's not. In fact, they're giving it a pretty big push--I was wondering why it was wandering around the schedule this week, but it turns out the reason is so that it will follow American Idol, Fox's biggest show, for its first two airings. If that's not giving it a fair shot, I don't know what is. And like all the networks, Fox will be scrambling more than usual this year to find stuff to air in the fall.

Since I have a Tivo I could care less what time slot it's in or what show it follows. It would only matter to people who actually watch "live" tv. I thought it was interesting and has potential. I'll have to watch a couple more episodes before making a final verdict. And I'd much rather know that a series is doomed from the beginning and might not last an entire season rather than investing time watching two or three seasons of a show and having the network abruptly cancel it giving it no closure.

This may come as a surprise, but this still covers the majority of TV watching. DVR usage is a minority sport - even people who have them mostly don't use them properly.
Obviously people on this board may disagree because, like me, they've had TiVo (ar a DVR at least) for some time and probably can't imagine TV without it. However, although it's an increasing number, it's still a minority.
We now return you to your regularly scheduled thread...

Which is why we SHOULD care what time slot it's in or what show it follows, because although none of that matters to us, it makes a big difference in the show's chances at survival.

There's not much I can do about a show's survival. I understand that most people do not have or use a DVR. All I did was state that for myself it doesnt matter what night or time slot the show is in. I'll Tivo it and watch it when I can.
Not terrible, but the initial banter between the two main characters when she first appeared at the crime scene was (terrible, that is). Can't see how this show can have any legs though.

I liked this better than I thought I would. I especially liked the time-lapse montage of Times Square from tee-pees to the present. The actual case was only so-so, but the show did what it needed to do in a pilot episode - laid some ground rules, established the characters, piqued my interest.
I was fully expecting there to be a follow-up scene where Amsterdam admits to Eva that, in fact, he didn't have a 6 year old child that was killed but just said that he did in order to establish rapport with the celebutant's mother. Guess not, though.

I watched it again after having watched it when it was first leaked -- what seems like a long time ago, now.
I think it's great and look forward to more; it held up well through a second viewing, too. I sure hope the American Idol lemmings at least just leave the TV tuned to the same channel after that disaster ends so this has some hope of getting decent ratings. :p

There's an episode of Ancient Discovers on the History Channel next week called Ancient New York (http://www.history.com/shows.do?episodeId=273131&action=detail) that fits in nicely with this series. Although based on the description, it goes back much further than John's lifetime.

From what I read, that pilot had some serious rework done on it before it got to it's final form. I wonder if that contributed to it being a little awkward in spots, so it'll be interesting to see how the next couple of episodes go. I thought it was decent enough to try another episode or two.

If DVR company's had any kind of brain they would give free classes on how to connect and use them. About a quarter of owners don't have them connected properly and half don't know how to use them properly. The same with HDTV's. It just drives me nuts that people waste money on things they have no clue on how to connect or operate.

Well, whether they are pushing it or not doesn't seem that relevant considering how starved the networks are for material at the moment.
Months ago I could have sworn I heard that the shows that they had in the can were all that were going to be produced, making it basically a 7 episode pilot.

True, but for an immortal, I prefer Highlander the Series. Somehow I don't see this getting into the type of character depth of Duncan MacLeod.

I kept thinking about The Highlander.
Actually the show concept is taken from a book by Pete Hamill called Forever. http://www.amazon.com/Forever-Novel-Pete-Hamill/dp/0316735698
Same basic plot - man comes to NY in the 17C, saves the life of an Indian slave whose magical sister puts a spell on him so that he can't die until he either leaves Manhattan or meets his true soul mate, and he then stays in NYC for the next 300 years. In the TV version, of course, they make him a cop, because, well, it's TV.
The book's a bit florid, not what I'd call fine literature, but an enjoyable read. Better than this TV series (which I haven't seen and don't intend to), apparently.

Bullpucky. The similarities - no let's be precise, IDENTICALITIES - that I pointed out alone are more than enough to prove it. This producer cannot seriously claim with a straight face that he independently came up with the concept of a guy who A) gets his immortality by saving the brother of an African woman during the slave trade in New York, who then B) grants him said immortality until he either leaves Manhattan or finds his true love?
He's just trying to get away with not paying royalties where royalties are due. Typical Hollywood, bald-faced thievery.

It wasn't being dropped in the middle that bugged me, it was the fact that people won't take him seriously if he keeps saying weird things like "I was at a speak easy," etc. If he has been around for so long he would have realized that by now. ;)

On the other hand, having people not take him seriously isn't necessarily a bad thing when he's hiding a big honking secret...if they stumble across something that might lead them to the truth, they'd probably just think, "Oh, that joker!"

http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/hr/content_display/television/news/e3ia3615def51405dc36516fa600eb2793a
Production on Fox's midseason drama "New Amsterdam" has been shut down indefinitely.
With seven episodes of supernatural drama in the can, the network's executives have decided to take a look and decide whether to order additional segments, something considered unlikely.
This follows Fox's decision Friday to cut the order for midseason comedy "The Return of Jezebel James" from 13 to 7. (HR 10/15) Both series hail from Regency TV.
"Amsterdam" stars Nikolaj Coster-Waldau as an immortal New York City police detective. The pilot of the series was directed by Lasse Hallstrom.

He said he knew it used to be a speak easy, back during prohibition. And when asked how he knew that he said because he used to drink there.
That could be interpreted (by someone who assumes he wasn't drinking in the '20s) as he used to drink at this club and because of that he was aware of its history as a speak easy.

I never watched any of the "vampire" genre shows, or Highlander, the Series for that matter, so I can enjoy this on it's own, which I am at least after the pilot.
The not-so-subtle "I've been here" kind of references don't really bother me that much, and I am much more likely to look past them in the pilot - there's a lot of things done in pilots to set the tone that they throttle back on later. I'll certainly be recording and watching for now.

The acting in episode 1 was quite bad. After a while I googled the lead actor and found out that he's danish or something. So I think he might be an ok actor with a weird accent that he's trying too hard to cover up. And it's not working... after living on manhattan for over 400 years he shouldn't still have a dutch/danish accent.
The acting improved quite a bit in the second episode, but still the show is just tolerable at best for me. Not anywhere near as good as Terminator
