View Full Version : Series 2 tuner vs. HD tuner

Here is a question for those of you who have experience with both the series 2 DT and the Tivo HD.

I have standard analog cable at my place. No cable box. The only HD I get is via a rooftop antenna directly connected to my TV.

I have been somewhat disappointed with the picture (watching live tv) that comes through the Series 2 that I have. Compared to the picture my TV (Samsung 40" LCD) produces when watching regular cable channels directly through it, the picture that my Series 2 produces is just not up to par.

I have tried different cables, and tried using the Series 2 hooked up to the TV by coax, composite and s-video. No real difference between the three. None of these connections matches the picture the TV produces with the cable coax attached directly.

So, here is the question.

Does the HD Tivo have a better SD tuner, or produce a better SD picture than the Series 2?

I realize someone has probably mentioned their opinion of this in another thread, but my search turned up no results.

So, any opinions?

Thanks,
Tom

While my Series 2 experience has been with single tuners only, some here including myself feel that the Series 3/THD models have better tuners and encode SD content better than the older TiVo models.

The S3/THD will also allow you to stick with analog cable and yet allow you to receive HD OTA on the same box.

Thanks for the input, Ron.

I thought for sure more people would have opinions on this. But, maybe not.
